Well finally, everything is getting finely tuned. I was out at ASWA's Tammin site on the weekend for some awsome clear dark skies.

2 x 10min iso 200
9 x 2 min iso 200
9 x 1 min iso 200
9 x 30 sec iso 200

any words of improvement gladly taken. Hopefully the colouring is right, as im not 100% cirtain of the colour management of the monitor.

Wow, there's an awful lot of detail there!
The colours are a bit too vibrant for my taste, but to each their own.
Great job Brendan.

They arnt ment to be so "neon" or vibrant as you say, its the monitor that im working on, its not colour matched, hence i cant see when its just right. I think ill just wait untill i can get ahold of the spyder and colour match my laptop monitor again.
Thankyou very much for the words though

It's a right pain isn't it, trying to get the calibration right between puters.
My images always end up looking too soft and under saturated.

JJJ are you in a position to do a little bit of colour management aka can you give it a tweek just so i have a image to base my colour matching off.?
jjjnettie
29-09-2009, 01:54 PM
I'll give it a go.
 I dropped the saturation down. Not too far I hope.

Round 2.
thanks JJJ for that, gave me a bit of a baseline, then i found where the colour matching spyder was :D hazzar, hopefully this is a bit better, pulled a little bit more detail out near the tendrils.

Thats a fantasic image Brendan, you must be made up after the hassle of getting it all to focus
:)

hehehe im nearly there with the Collimnation (:D hehehe) its still just a little bit off, but i wasn't going to fiddle too much with it, all i knew is that the focus was hitting close enough for the night!
Its amazing how much i have learnt since march of this year remembering i got the scope in november 08, mount in jan 09, and the cam march 09 and its just been modified a month or so ago.! heres a photo of my previous best shot of M42

Brendan,
Great capture and it is interesting to watch the image change as it is being manipulated. Gives me a few ideas. Modded 40D is plenty good.
Thanks

very nice image Brendan. Looks like you have got everything working very nicely. To me the image seems a little blue but I like the robust colours a lot. Detail, focus and guiding all look pretty good.
Glad you have everything working well.
Look forward to seeing more images.

Well after the pestering of my partner saying that the first stack that and process that i did (without the processing of the core) was alot nicer in colour. so i just did a bit of layer masking and got those "robust colours" to show. let me know what you think.
The colours might seem quite over processed but on the pc thats colour calibrated looks a mint.

This is a great shot Brendan, I like the composition too, nice work .
It is fun doing Sidonio's (ie repo's :P) but you need to be careful that you don't get lost and end up going backwards.
I agree with big JJJ, the first shot was a bit too luminous and lipstick but otherwise it was the best IMO.
Great work and again it looks mighty fine with or without the lipstick :D

Nice one mate, that mod on the 40d is certainly worth it.
Great Image.

thanks all. when i head down to Dryandra on the new moon im going to look at getting some nice vibrant shots of Running man to add in as a mosaic to compleat the picture. :) heres to then
Oh and Martin yes the mod was more than worth it i belive! the DSLR now works a treat fully opened up now all i have to do is sway curtin to spend some dollars in the narrow band filters Ha, O3, S2 :D

Good luck with Dryandra Brendan, looking forward to more results.. I take it you're planning to add more exposure to the M42 image?
Ha O3 and S2 filters on a DSLR may work, but you're looking at mammoth exposure times.. think 30 minute subs minimum in S2, and probably LOTS of them in order to have a noise free image.. if they were fairly wide filters (somewhere between 15~12nm) you might get away with it, but something in the realms of 7~3nm you'll likely never get enough data with a DSLR... Keep that in mind when trying to sway curtin to spend dollars!
bmitchell82
05-10-2009, 07:20 PM
well the modification that is done on the DSLR isn't a filter replacement its just open! :D no filter at all so the cmos sensor is open to this filter range! but i have the understanding that you need some good lengthy exps for this.
AlexN
05-10-2009, 07:29 PM
Yea, still, its got a bayer matrix film, so Ha will still only be captured in 1/4 of the pixels, and the sensitivity of the CMOS sensor in the camera is fairly low, regardless of the filter (or lack there of). Long exposures and lots of them will give you a good result... but be ready for some seriously long total exposure images spanning multiple nights...

hoorah :D (bonus is that you don't have to wait for a moonless night :D)
plenty of great nights. problem is 2 weeks out of 4 are FUBAR.!

Apart from the guiding being a tad off egging the dimmer stars, I'd blow that pic up and hang it on my wall.
And hey when did you see the crack in the cloud cover in perth for that shot?
Oh and while I think of it I ordered a book on setting up a small observatory the publisher delivered 2 copies by mistake, PM me if you want the spare copy for studies or whatever. seeing as you live locally.

Thanks for that robbie, ide never say no to literature and considering im going to be setting up a small obs soon, that would be sweet.!
The guiding does look off (but it isn't :) ) thats just my shotty aligning in PS.
Thanks again for the compliments.!
