GSO Laser Collimator

Is this the way it's meant to be?
This collimator does not project a dot-point but rather a poorly defined linear shape. Projecting it about e metres onto a wall, the pattern is about 20mm long and 3mm wide with poorly defiuned borders.
Makes collimation more miss than hit, it seems to me. Can it be fixed?

I use one, and it projects a point of light, not a pin point small dot, but a point of light nonetheless, even from several metres back, its still a point of light ...

Sounds like your laser collimator needs collimating itself. I think I remember reading instruction on how to do this somewhere in the IIS forums. Or did I google it and fing an article somewhere else? (I cant remember, being blonde and all...). But with a little patience it's not too hard to do.

ide say the laser pointer is stuffed, they use a lens to collminate the laser beam to a point, if that lens isn't ring it will diffuse the beam (which is what your seeing). Laser light points straight and only diffuses if it passes though a medium with a different refraction index, further more if this medium isn't square the light will not pass straight, it will curve away from the original beam path.

Well I called them and was told : this is how it's meant to be!!
So my advice: do not buy this product. I'm also going to be a little bit more careful where I buy my stuff from now on.

So that must mean the hundreds of us who use one, with a point of light, must have it all wrong, and they must all be broken!

Mine is the same. If you pull it apart you'll see that you can put whatever laser pointer you want into the holder. There must have been a special on pointers with a "-" rather than a "." You could put a different pointer into the holder if you have one (make sure you the collimate it) or just stick with it as is. It happens that the "-" mine projects is exactly the width of my mirror midpoint mark. So I still can still just line the projection across the mark.
