Celestron 8 SCT need help identyfying the parts

Hello. I have recently purchased a Celestron 8 SCT. On the finder scope eye piece there is a small chrome fitting with a red light in side. The eye piece has cross hairs in it. I assume that the light is supposed to light up the cross hairs at night. However, there are not any holes inside the eye piece to let the light through. Any idea what it is used for. Could the eye piece be a holder for that light used at night. It is 30mm long and 25mm dia. The light globe is about 6mm dia.

sounds like a croos between red dot finder & illuminated reticle - it would be for night to line up objects or drift align - a pic would tell us what it looks like & solve the mystery

The object is an illuminated retical finder .
You screw the cap which is the switch, in the dark when you turn it on you will see the cross hairs lit up red you then put the object say a star in the center of the cross hairs and if it is properly aligned with the telescope you should see that star in the telescope eyepiece.
The hole is in the base of the eyepiece holder , not in the eyepiece.
Just wait till it is dark and try it.

The finder scope is a small refractor telescope, the light comes down to a small mirror which reflects the light towards the eyepiece the little red light is reflected onto the cross hairs illuminating them.:)
Just a tip, remember to turn the switch of,because the batteries are very expensive:(

Hello again. Thanks for the responses. My mistake. I did post this in the wrong forum. I saw eye pieces and that was it. No, there is nothing to give away. You should see my shed, it is full of "save it, just in case I could use it later" As I said before, I could not see any hole for the light to go through into the eye piece. As suggested, I will turn it on again in the dark and see what happens. I'll keep you posted in this forum for the time been.

:thumbsup: Thanks for that. It works exactly as you said it would. The illumination is similar to a Telrad I have on another telescope.
