I took this on the 11th of this month.
Mount eq5
Canon 20d
Canon 50mm f1.8 lens @ f4
56 minutes of 2min subs @ ISO 800
ICNR Off
DSS
CS3
It's earmarked for a repro at a later date. I processed this one while tired.

Thanks for looking, and for the kind comments.
I'd like to add more data to it. Eventually. I definitely need another dslr. One for taking wide fields while the other is shooting at prime focus. I know I could always use the Gstar for prime, but it's not the same now is it.
That's nice jjj.
Why did you have ICNR off?
And sorry if this is a dopey question, but I've only recently headed down the DSO path - but would 56 minutes of 2 min exposures mean you used 28 exposures (lights) to achieve this image?
Cheers.

Sorry, I didn't mention it in my first post, but I took darks afterwards Matt. Only about 10x2min. But it's enough to do the job I think.

Lovely work Jeanette.
Perhaps a little oversaturated on this screen, but the colours certainly are vibrant!
I took an image of the same area on Saturday night, with the 28mm f/2.8 lens - hopefully i'll start processing it tonight.

I agree, the Gstar does a good job, but its not in the same league as the DSLR.. If you could have the ED80 + DSLR on the EQ5 taking closer images with the other DSLR + 50mm F/1.8 on the cube or the tower you'd be able to crank out the images!
I really look forward to seeing M31 and M33 in one FOV.. that should be wild!

ICNR was turned off so I could collect as many subs as I could before the constellation got too low in the sky.
I lost about an hours worth of subs due to errors in tracking.

I had a second DSLR (my 20D) on Saturday night which I was planning on using for star trails, but realised I only have one ball mount, and it was busy with the 350D piggyback on top of the ED80 - so I couldn't use it on the tripod!
doh!

Great piccie Jeanette:D:D
Big diff' between 8 bit mono and 12-16 bit colour. The DSLR will trump the Gstar all the time there. However, the Gstar will go a lot deeper:D
Oh BTW, Steve's been testing a colour version of the Gstar...should have the results soon.

I've been following that.
I should have offered to beta test for him eh.

Why not...if I'd have known earlier I may have too. It'll probably be a 16bit camera. I hope so and with a bigger resolution probably. Doesn't have to be much larger, but a slightly bigger resolution would be good.

Hi JJJ
I was tossing up myself whether to go that wide, but decided to try my luck (I mean tracking) with zooming in a little (90mm) on the M8/M20 region.
You did this one well, you are really mastering your 50mm.

I've just looked at this image on the desk top monitor, and I see what you mean about over saturation.
This is kind of what it looks like on my laptop. Minus the compression noise.

Now that's a Great shot Jeanette. I much prefer the colour of the nebs in the second shot, though the star field looks more vibrant in the first version. Now if you could only take the colour of the stars from the first one and the colour of the nebula from the second one and combine the two it would be

I'll take that on board when I do the repro Paul.
But first I'll have to callibrate the monitor of the lappy to the desk top. That way I know exactly what I'm getting.:)

Lagoon and Triffid on the lower left, Eagle in the center and Omega to the lower right of that.

Matt - It looks to be centered almost exactly on M16... to the right of that you can see M17, and in the bottom left area, M8 M20 and M21...

It's a combo of 3 different constellations.
Sagittarius, Scutum and Ophiuchus.

Jeanette,
That is a great image. I much prefer the second, but, agree with Paul -- a combination of the two would rock.
I love how M7 is pinpoint down the bottom. :)

Great image you have there .. widefield shots are amazing and have a place on their own in the scheme of things astro photgraphy wise. You'de have to be pretty chuffed with this result.
