friend or foe.... you decide.
daylight savings starts this week end in most eastern states.... an i dont like it!:mad2:

i personally think it should be in winter not summer. that way its not dark when i go home in the colder months and during summer we dont have to wait till 9pm till it get dark enought to see stars. I am not worried about the sun getting up early :)

Thats why we dont have it up here David.

I dont see the point on having at all in any state.

7:00pm it gets dark and thats late enough.

To buck the trend I like it!..... Yes, it can be a pain for astronomy, but for everything elst it's great. Personally I use it to go mountain biking or kayaking after work. Even better, I can still do this stuff when it's cloudy & still light, and not feel like I'm missing out on astronomy time!!!! :D
Cheers

Best thing since sliced bread; here in tassie we started daylight saving a month ago and december january our daylight extends till 9:30Pm, but I do agree it's of little use in Queensland. For me that means 4 hours of daylight after work. The first reinstatement of daylight saving since WW2 was in Tassie and was implemented to save power. (1960's I remember)

Not to mention that the extra daylight fades the curtains.

And the cows will get confused!!!!

When i was living/working in sydney i thought it was great... only because if i got home at 6-7pm... it was still daylight... and it felt like i could still do things in the afternoon. Now that Im in Rocky i don't want it, cause it only takes me 5 mins to get home :)
plus simon has been waking up at 6:30am all this week.. if we had DLS then he'd be waking up at 5:30am.. and thats just INSANE!

I voted friend by very close margin.

Yeah if it is such a benefit why dont we have have it all year round.

I suppose its better to have all the people happy half the time instead of one half happy all the time and the others can get st****ed.

I reckon it's good for the southern states. The sun gets up far too early without it, not that it worries me since I work arvo shift anyway.
Back when I used to play cricket the extra hour of daylight made a big difference at training.

Daylight saving is unnatural and will give everyone grey hair. :P

I mean what next, you want to tilt the Earth for warmer summers at the poles? Got to get used to the Planet's natural orbital eccentricities!

Why doesn't the time on the site show DST?

I agree with Robby and Slice - I LOVE IT! theres more to life than astronomy and DS makes perfect sense at our lattitudes - I can understand the bananabenders getting plenty of sunshine all year, and not wanting anymore - but hey qld is just one state/territory out of 7.

I have to agree. OK it means we can't observe in the evenings till later, but if you are into morning sessions then ;). I like to be able to get some things done after work and set up while it's still light...

Nice of someone to bump a 2-year old thread :)

I like daylight savings as well, because it gives me time to get the kids in bed and still setup in the daylight. It is a pain when it's not dark until 9:30pm and gets light at 4am though :)

I'm a fence sitter nowadays, it was good while I was working and life was ruled by the clock. Now that I've retired it doesn't bother me either way, just get up when I'm ready and go to bed ditto :) Ain't retirement wonderful.

It is nice to get a bit of sun light by the time you get home from work. Have a meal outside, Go running while its light, Do a big of the garden. So i am for it. I don't think it would disturb my astronomy to much.

I'm a fence sitter. I did hate it, and might yet this summer, but so far I haven't minded it.

Yes it means I get less astronomy time out in the observatory, but it means I can easily go for a 1-2 hour bike ride after work, then have dinner, then go out to the observatory.

It helps that I run my gear automated, so leave it going while I sleep. Without that, I think my astronomy would be dramatically cut.

In principal I don't agree with it - if there's any time I'd like daylight saving it's during winter when I don't see the sun for work. And why bother messing with timezones, just live with how it is.

I guess as it turns out, I don't care either way - I take advantage of both alternatives.

In the referendum we will be having in another year or so, I still expect to be voting against it.

Roger.

Whats an extra hour?? It doesnt really change much, just means i can get home after work and mow the lawn in daylight through summer......i can also have dinner and go walking afterwards......
Its not a real big deal....

I've never liked it and now they've extended it in the US, so we're on savings time more than standard time. :mad2:

It's amusing that we humans think so highly of ourselves, that we try to control time, though.
