As the topic suggests, is the Skyview Pro mount sold by Sirius the same quality as the EQ5. Reason for asking is i am about to drop a lot of money into an entry imaging rig (ED80 etc.) and I want to do it right the first time. I will be looking at adding a guidescope down the track so the mount has to take the two scopes plus a DSLR. Any help appreciated as I will be making the purchase when i get back from Uni in two weeks.
Hi Mick,
I'm not an imager myself, but I've read the stock standard replies to this same question many times. The experts would tell you that the eq5 probably won't cut it. The HEQ5 would be the minimum to aim for, and even then they would probably say to go for the eq6 - even if it means saving up a bit longer. The mount is the most important thing - no good having you beaut scopes and cameras etc if the mount wobbles at the first breeze.
Hope the experts don't contradict me here, but if they do, then please disregard what I've said and listen to them.
Cheers
Mick,
I'll go one better than that. I've watched other member/s (who have to be nameless of course) go down this same track and get the heq5. And before you know it, the unit is up for sale - probably at a bit of a loss, and they get an eq6 as was originally suggested by people responding to their original questions - just like yours now. Wait to see what others say, but I think you'll find they'll say don't scimp on the mount.
There, - that's my 2c finished now

I agree with Paul. Try for the HEQ 5.
As for your question the little bit of info i've seen on orion SVP suggests it's an EQ5. Orion do a mount called the Sirius EQG which is the exact same mount as HEQ5. You can image on an EQ5 and i suggest you look at Cloudy Nights forum. Lots of people in the US image with them, some quite well, most will probably say they wish they got a bigger mount at the start though.
the HEQ5 is a great mount and i think gets overshadowed by the EQ6. If your going to be imaging with a ED80 + guidescope the HEQ5 will handle that load easy and will be easier to move around then a EQ6.

I'd really recommend paying the extra and going for the EQ6PRO myself...

They are the same mount - just superficial differences. Good for visual use, but definitely not designed for any but the most basic imaging.
