I found the rock pictured on a friends lawn. I think it is volcanic but I am not sure there were no other rocks like it in the area how do you tell if it is a Meteorite. It is fairly light but it is not Pumice.

:thanx:

I'm getting low quality (un-recognisable) pics when I click to view a larger image, but the thumbnails are good.

But as for the rock, I'm no expert.

Looks far too porous to me.

Trevor (one on one) is the expert however. Trev?

I'd say your first guess was right, volcanic.

It does look rather volcanic, doesn't it? But far more experts here to help. Intersting find though. I enjoy unique looking rocks and stones like this.

If it is lite, then it may be volcanic.
I think the last time this came up, someone said most meteorites contain metallic particles. Run a magnet over it..

A old experiment is to set up a diagonal sheet, attach some magnets at the lower draining end, then wait for a shower.
Small fragments of "meteorites", get collected in rain clouds and may be collected via this method... I'm not joking... I know a scientist friend whom does this all the time.

Have done it. Great idea

Have you? Nice!! I have not done it myself, I believe I once saw what he got, it was more "dust" like, but magnetic none the less... I think it is still debated whether it actually is meteorite "dust", ti's a cool experiment anyway...

What's the biggest "piece" you have found? Or is it all "dust"?

Mostly dust, some spheres show up under a microscope. Some years ago I bought a small 35mm Nickel & Iron meteorite for my wife. Luckly she liked it.

Have a look at this site: Meteorwrongs (http://meteorites.wustl.edu/meteorwrongs/meteorwrongs.htm)
It a good site for seeing what is not a meteorite.

It looks more volcanic than meteoritic to me too. Try it out with a magnet, most meteorites have a fairly high iron content, even stony ones can be 20%. If it is magnetic, then the probability will go up considerably.
