There was a slight error in the order form which showed OS prices on the second (confirmation) page even for Australian orders (the first page showed the correct sub-total).

This error on the second page has now been fixed. I'll contact those who have ordered already.

iceman
12-09-2009, 07:19 AM
Also, please feel free to order as many as you like - if people are ordering multiple quantities, then the initial 100 will be pre-ordered quickly and it gives us a reason to go beyond the initial 100 and go to (for example) 200.

So that's a GOOD THING!

Great to see so many orders coming in - keep them coming. It'll help us with the confidence to extend the order and ensure no-one misses out.

Please remember:
1) You need to SUBMIT on the second page of the order form. You will receive a confirmation email when it's been done correctly.
2) Put your name as the reference in the any bank transfers
3) The paypal button is not linked to the order form - you need to fill in AND submit an order form FIRST, then you need to fill in the correct amount in the paypal field (including paypal surcharge).

Thanks

Wow. How humbling!!! :thanx:

What a great uptake, and we thank you all very much for your trust in the production by pre-ordering as you have. This lets us gather the funds necessary to go to the printers, and pay for the numbers required beforehand. Otherwise, we would never have a hope of doing this at all - so again, thank you!

Where we're at:

Proofs of random pages are being produced on the digital press during this week - to the actual final paper stock. A complete proof, end to end, is also being run off as a single proof sheet, allowing us to see the general look of the colour which will indicate whether the colour separation (RGB to CMYK) parameters are in the ball park. Typically, CMYK separation leaves colours a little flat if not tweaked accordingly. Please be aware that I've left most of your images basically as you supplied them to me, and for some I've upped the saturation level a few percent to compensate. A good thing is that for those who have not been published before, you'll have a good idea of how your images perform on press for next time.

I've yet to complete the covers, front/back and inside (intro and indexes), so they will go during this week as well.

Given that this is all OK, we're expecting to wait until the end of September (Thursday 1st October, 2009) to see what our final order numbers are - and this number will be used to create our official order quantity from.

Printing should take around 10-12 days, and the books should be ready for shipping during the third or last week of October depending on workload at the printers. It's approaching Christmas, so they're pretty busy.

All in all - you should have them in your hot little hands during that last week in October! Overseas buyers may have to wait an extra few days - sorry! (Shoe's on the other foot now that you're buying from us here in Oz! LOL!)

Once again - thanks so much for all the support and encouragement! Hopefully we'll be doing a much larger one next year (maybe 200 pages if we can negotiate a good price!), so for those that missed out this year - keep your best for the next one! The best part about doing this was talking to the contributors via plenty of both email and PM's, and I feel that I know all of you just a little better than before. I'm keen to meet you at IISAC or other great star parties coming up and say a very warm "Hi"!

Fantastic Chris. You know something, I was thinking this week, that because this has been so popular, would a 2010 compendium be on the cards?? You've just answered my question.

The success of this inaugural compendium will give everyone the motivation to create their 2010 masterpiece! (oh no, it of course means another awkward self-image)

A big thanks also to the member who "planted the seed" of the idea, jjj ;)

jjjnettie

Just a heads-up for those that haven't ordered stuff through IceInSpace before:

I don't contact you to tell you I've received your payment. It's just not practical for me to do that. When I receive your payment, I mark it off in the database and that's it until you receive your book.

You'll only hear from me if there's a problem with your order, or if I haven't received your payment within a reasonable amount of time.

Of course if you're worried about whether your payment went through, feel free to contact me and ask - and I'll let you know. Please just remember to include your name in the reference field for any bank transfers - otherwise it's very difficult to find your payment. That is, don't use "book order" or "compendium payment" etc - just put your name and I'll know what it's for.

Please keep those orders coming in!

Cheers

Hi Mike
I ordered one and five minutes later changed my mind and ordered another one for my friend in London who supplies all my equipment, a pity a few other sites and forums don't do something like this, there is hell of a lot of talent out there far exceeding what the pros could do at Palomar 10 years ago and its only right their work should be put to print.
Best wishes

Not sure if you've ever ordered a book from Momento (momento.com.au) but they have quite a good minimalist designed but ample cardboard protective "box" for their books. Not sure if it's the kind of thing that can be bought off the shelf from packing companies somewhere.

OK - I was waiting for Mike to say something, but he hasn't yet - so I will. :)

Mike and myself went to the printers and signed off on the final proofs yesterday afternoon. They looked, quite frankly, beautiful. We were also shown a full book mock-up, and it was fantastic to be able to hold it in hand with pages in the order they'll be in.

Printing and binding should be finished, and books delivered to Mike for disbursement, on or around the 30th of October as promised. From there we pray to the AustPost gods for quick delivery! We may yet commission the printers to manage that for us - we'll keep you...uhmmm.. posted!

I received them yesterday (Tuesday arvo).

Thanks to the trains, I didn't get home until late and I'm off to Melbourne this morning and don't get home until tomorrow night.

To make sure I've found the right postage option, I put some together last night and I'll be sending about 18 packs out this morning - the lucky sods who were first to order and pay, and the generous sods who ordered 3 or more books.

So you guys should receive yours before the end of the week.

To everyone else, thanks for your patience. I'm sure you understand. I didn't start packing until 10pm last night and had to get up at 3:20am this morning for the 6am flight :(

I'll be sending more on Friday, and likely the bulk of them on Monday. I need to head back to the P.O to buy more of the padded bags.

This Melbourne trip was unexpected, and it actually takes quite a while to put all the orders into the bags, write the names and addresses etc.

Having said all that, Chris is right. They do look and feel BRILLIANT! :P

I received my compendium today. Great stuff.
The ^%#%*^{ post office rolled it up and stuffed it in our small po box with 4 other magazines and mail and junk took 5 mins to get all the mail out. The compendium is now shaped like a banana and now under my EQ6 balance weights to try and straighten it out.
The more I say to the po the worse it gets.

Too right. You've paid good money for this and it shouldn't get to you in such poor condition. Let them have it, take it higher if you need to and don't back down.

As a frequent eBayer (and pedant) poor treatment of packages is a pet hate of mine:mad2:

The book looks great. Page 7 would be my un-biased favourite!

The only negative would be some pages with too many pictures submitted, maybe some should have been held over to the 2010 Compendium.........

:thanx:

Omaroo
07-11-2009, 09:48 AM
Thanks Dave :)

The reason that some pages have many images placed on them is that the contributors only had very low resolution images that were already small in size and that would not otherwise scale for print at 300dpi. Given this, it was either place a single image at a tiny 1/6th page size in the middle of the page and have it drown...or do what I did. Creating mosaics with low-res images was the only option.

Thanks Alex - and Adrian, I hope yours recovers! What turkeys!

Chris and Mike ,

well, where does one start....

Thank you both of you guys. From the bottom of my heart.
It turned out even better than I had imagined.
I still have trouble believing it came off.
How you organised 80 contributors is commendable to both of you.
The printer has done a fantastic job. Thanks to them, whoever they are!
It's real, and I now have one!

And as for which page stands out .....they all do!
Thank you the 80 people for making this go from an idea
to a real thing. Tickled pink....or is it purple :)

I like the attention to details such as the purple font on Jen's page ;). So many wonderful shots across the board. So colorful. I'm really sorry to hear about the odd one or two which were delivered by postmen who just plain don't care. I guess that they are under contract to deliver mail, whatever it is, into whatever receptacle is provided at the front of your driveway. Does anyone know if they are under instruction to make judgement calls and refuse to damage whatever they're delivering and leave a note asking you to collect from the PO?

Omaroo
12-11-2009, 10:09 AM
I'd like to stay with the 8" x 8" form factor Alex. There are numerous reasons why it terms of how it's printed, and this also gives the choice of printing it on a web-offset press or digital if required. Larger formats lock you to the long-run process. Besides, the first one is done, and it'd be nice to stack them in year order next to each other on a bookshelf as the years go by...

2 pages per imager - that's a distinct possibility.

Sorry mate, I totally disagree with you.

I think some of the negative comments in that closed thread might be useful towards the next 2010 one - if there is a next one.

It sound like there needs to be more contributions to the next one. For example, an expanded written text on the objects imaged with even associated visual observations and perhaps how to find it visually. Another useful idea would be small insert maps of the region the objects are placed aka. like South African Vandenberg - Blank of the 1980s.

Might give us non-imagers something to contribute instead of feeling rather excluded from commenting or add to the discusssion...

Unless you have not been reading this and the other threads very carefully - the intent of this COFFEE TABLE BOOK was to showcase the images from contributors from IIS forum members. it was never to be a book of the type you are pushing for and that was stated very early in the development of it. :thanx:

We didn't want to go into competition with Astronomy 2009 nor Sky and Tel.

Yes I have been reading the other threads very carefully.

As for suggesting "pushing for", sorry I am not pushing for anything. I'm stating my opinion.

Really. In the end, I am getting the uneasy feeling of exclusion - either because I am not an imager, I did not contribute (even though I offered), so that any comment made by me is not appreciated.

By putting people down is certainly one way of achieving that…

As Iceinspace is a shared community of all of us who are interested in astronomy, not just imagers, it seems strange to me that there would be such a defensive response to the suggestion that we consider expanding upon the great achievement of the Compendium to produce something next year that can accommodate contributions from visual observers as well. I want to be involved too, beyond my contribution this year which was limited to writing the copyright statement!

I have no gripe that the Compendium was intended as a coffee table book by those who conceived and executed it this year. I fail to see how that origin should bind the IIS community when considering what it might produce next year.

If those interested in imaging want to take the same approach next year, and produce a volume which is a compilation of images only, it is important that those people understand that this has the effect of excluding those of us who do not image. I am not saying there was such an agenda this year, far from it.

Making suggestions about developing concepts is a healthy part of being a growing functioning community. Let's try to listen to each other rather than defend our own beachheads.

I've no problem with any of what you said Rod.
Constructive criticism is always welcome. :) :hi:

Please people, we have already had one thread closed because of the way this is starting to turn. Enough!

Look at this book for what it is. A collection of works from IIs'ers good and bad (I definately class myself amongst the later).

Maybe not everyone can contribute but we can all enjoy. Lets do so.

BTW, got mine today. Chris, Mike et al, you should be proud for what you have achieved here, the book and everyones efforts look amazing!!

Perhaps we could consider a montage of members with their gear as end-plates for next years addition.

Greg.

I still haven't had the opportunity to get to town for the mail, but would like to thank everybody involved.

Come on guys I am not an Imager I am just an enthusiast who just stuck his camera into the small end of my scope and snapped some shots and was thrilled that the results were included it something so great. It seems to me that if imagers started the idea then great but I don't see it as an US and Them situation. IIS members did the hard work to put this thing together and print it. Why don't the people causing all this discussion get together and do the work and produce an astronomer's Diary for each year instead of trying to make everything that someone does into a slight against one group over another and even though I am hopeless at putting any thoughts together on what I can see when I am observing I for one would be thrilled to see what you can all come up with and would not feel left out.:thanx:

 Hi all.... my first solo posting, altho' I've been keeping up with IIS for the last couple of years via my better half who kept telling me I should join up instead of reading his stuff! Congratulations on your publication. Being a new member, and also a Box Brownie Chic, I hope you'll continue to give opportunities for rookies like myself next year. We're not all Isaac Newtons with a Nikon, but we do all share a common passion for astronomy and that's what's important guys.

This thread is not for the discussion of next years compendium. I'm sure there'll be another opportunity (with cooler heads) to discuss next years compendium.

What the compendium was never intended to be, was an almanac, an ephemeris etc. There's already a very good publication called "Astronomy 2010 Yearbook" with enough ephemera that anyone could ever want.

It was also never (and will never) be a competition. All images will always be accepted.

:welcome: Marg!
