Ok, the original thread (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=2913) with this title is well known, but is up to four years old.
Lets do it again, but this time with a more realistic poll!
The results should be interesting! :D

It's a great scope.....I've gone to mag 15.9 from my outer suburban Melbourne backyard, and I've killed both Saturn and Jupiter lol :D Great scope, but falls victim to cloud and crap seeing all to often :(

Do you want current resale value or purchase price? I have a really nice 25cm mirror that cost about $200 in 1975. Worth more than that now. On the other hand I paid about $100 for some plossls which would be worth <$50 now.

Its scary when there are quite a few of us in the 10K to 50K range.
Shows how nuts we are, according to my wife:D.
Those few that are in the 50k plus bracket must have lost the plot .

When I add up my observatory, scopes, computers, cameras, TV eyepieces, and everything in between to be able to see/image small bits of light, I am crazy,

but,

I could be blowing it at the pub/casino/horse racing like a few friends do, and my wife is all for it as it makes for a nice family activity that the kids love been involved in.

A mate was over the other day looking at my new observatory and started saying I am nuts for spending large money on this hobby and he could not see the point in it, but when I said to him you blew over 50K on a fishing boat and gear that sits in your yard at least 350 days a year gathering dust, he soon shut up .

If there are 6500 odd members, at...say..an average of $2K of equipment that would give a figure of some $13 million.
A bit of a worry that !

MrB
07-09-2009, 09:07 PM
Just for fun, if we use the lowest value in each bracket($0, $1k, $5k etc) then we are up to $287k already.
That works out to an average $7.5k each (including the two $0's) over 37 voters. :eyepop:

This is one advantage of living in Sydney. Andrews and Bintel are in driving distance on the way to or from work. No waiting for goodies.

And they both have people who recognise my voice.

Should I answer the poll with what it is worth today, or what it will be when SWMBO approves the next CCD+filters? That changes the bracket.

All of my gear except the 300mm lens from Bert would be less than 5K but that beautiful piece of glass is worth more than that. Thats why it resides inside, in a bag with dessicant silica gel, next to my bed, whereas the rest of my gear is stored in the garage, which is itself lined and insulated so everything is kept nice and dry.

When I got my 10 inch scope and mount, Halleys Comet was gracing the southern skies!

I always find it interesting that to an amateur astronomer $10,000 is a huge amount, but to an amateur fisherman $10,000 would barely get you a dingy and line, and to a car enthusiast $10,000 is barely useful either. Even a sports enthusiast would spend $5k+ on home theater/TV setup.

Roger.

Starkler
08-09-2009, 01:51 PM
I was also going to mention cars and boats, and both have huge ongoing costs that star gazing does not.
It all comes down to where your priorities in life lie. Who's to say that 10k is too much to spend if this is your one true passion and hobby?

If the wife complains, say you want to buy a classic car to restore or a power boat. Then you will experience a real money pit.

g__day
08-09-2009, 03:08 PM
It would be worth considering the re-sale value here. If someone bought $100K of gear - and sold it ten years later for $80K they are probably happy with what their net $2K per annum hobby cost them.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were astronomy loans and large astro clubs offering registered users the ability to lease lease top gear for a few years then return them when you want to focus on other things. I want access to certain gear - I don't feel the compelling need to "own it"!

coldspace
08-09-2009, 03:17 PM
So true,

My gear and observatory is worth lots, but no where near my mates fishing boat/gear that cost him over 50K and gets used a couple of times a month if he's lucky.
So my wife doesn't complain about when I spend, besides I am lucky as this is now a family hobby.

Matt.

AlexN

brand new prices all up would be around the 5k mark... a bit more I suppose depending on where you buy... but yeah.. 5k is near enough.

When I met my wife, she knew that i was pretty deep into cameras and astronomy stuff, and we agreed that there would be no questions asked if i traded, sold, swapped my stuff, which i still do today.

The only thing she says is, ( Now what are you selling, buying etc with a smile)  I say its all good Alice, don't worry darl, :) this is a good bargain, swap or what ever.

We have a great relation ship in this regard, and all is well.

My gear is worth quite a bit, but i have to agree with the others, boats, cars etc age and lose value, good glass dose not. ;)

How much is my gear worth ? good question .

Too much to publically advertise in a public forum I expect , there are villians and thieves out there .

Also it depends on the current exchange rate .

Same reason why I don't list my gear in my profile here and elsewhere.

I am really not impressed with this thread, where are the moderators!

I do not think its appropriate, for a number of reasons.

1,why would anybody want to advertise on a public forum

what they have and its worth,we have allready had one member on this site loose a flourite telescope to a theif,i changed my items list
very quickly after that, like other members did.

2,i really think its a bit 'offish' with the ego bit, some members starting

out, have very little, and even less budgets,it can/could be of putting.

I think the moderators are should think about this thread.

One thing good, about it.is talk on insurance-i have disscussed this with my agent, may be a thread could be started on that subject.

1. The poll is anonymous. You can't tell how much my gear is worth or what I voted, can you?

2. You don't have to post to it.

3. If you want to break into my place and steal my gear, best of luck. Just remember to wear a helmet that deflects baseball bats.

4. If you come over on a night I'm not home and my family isn't there, well done and have at it. I could do with some new gear.

As to the safety of posting how much I've spent, my name isn't on the voting roll (silent voter). Neither are my parents. We're not listed in the phone book too either. The real question should be how much have you spent on your astronomy gear

I did a quick add up for the last 20 years and it does come to more than $100000.

What's it worth now. I suppose I could get about $5000 if some sucker came along.

1. "Price is what you pay, value is what you get" so said Ben Graham, one of Warren Buffet's cronies. I don't think he had astronomy in mind when he said this though but I think it applies.:confused2::confused: :confuse3:

2. Jen, have you got something new to bring to Snake Valley?

3. As to the original thread, I have spent far too much for the frustration it has bought. Who pays for grief? Would be much less stressful watching TV every night (but mostly not as enjoyable). Thinking about it that's what I mostly do anyway because of the weather here :( :windy: :rain: :cold:

bmitchell82

Well when I last posted i was only a mid range 1-5k man. :P this has changed quite significately now and if the next six months goes to plan. :P it will most likely click to Purple ville :( hehehehe. But at the moment im in the 5-10K and I use every single bit of my kit on a regular basis (weather permitting).

But like my family tells me that in the grand scheme of things whats 20k worth of astronomy equipment that has a very good resale value (if selected and looked after correctly). Nothing really, as this hobby isn't a money pit at all it is in my opinion it is very cheap and satisfying.

Further to this, it is family friendly, Mr Plod approved and given the right circumstance very sociable or in others almost like meditation! I had a zen like moment just the other night sitting 3hrs out of Perth in a field with 20 grey Kangaroos having my dinner waiting for the darkness to come over. Once it did and everything was going, i was having a sip of 12yo Galway Pipe port and some nice Lindt dark chocolate completely alone.... doesn't get much more relaxing than that my friends.

Yes, frustration but also satisfaction of conquering a technical challenge. The greatest reward comes from the more difficult challenges. I'm nearish retirement and in a crap job, no prospects or real value so I see it as an ongoing 'project' that keeps me mentally active and engaged. Probably spend more time at work thinking my way round ideas and solutions astronomically than real 'work'. (and posting on here )
There is no price on that kind of reward. I'll be up in the $10k-$15k area by the time I start getting decent results I reckon.

Could be worse, I was going to go serious on motorsports and you can blow $10-S15k on one event :eyepop: ... anyone want to buy a turbo hatch club car ? Cheap ?

For me it is great to be able to converse with others on here that enjoy looking up at night. If the amount spent brings happiness then the rewards cannot be summed up in $$$ terms. I would much rather rub shoulders with who ever spent many thousands on here, than the poor individual that has put the same amount through a Pokie machine, and devastate their life and others around them.

So I really mean it when I say "all the best".

few hundred bob.

but it's not the dosh but the enjoyment u get out of it.

if i had more I would use what I have less lol. so that isn't necessarily more enjoyment. just more precision.

Earlier this year in melbourne the weather was very nice in the mornings just before dawn. Anyway I pulled out the 8" to look at Jupiter and goddam it looked like jup does thru like a 20" I have never seen such resolution. That was a one-off however. :/

I agree that many beginners will be best-served with an entry-level camera, but I also think that such a camera does not offer as much room to grow. It’s a difficult choice — personally.
I find the learning process of astronomy to be wonderfully fun. And it never really stops. In terms of a newer camera + one lens versus an older camera + two lenses, I think that different people would have to choose based upon their needs.

Well I'm surprised at where I'm at. I tallied what replacement cost would be if I lost it all and had to get everything again. Puts me in the $5k-10k range.

I do look at this thread though and people shocked at what they are spending on their hobby that they are so passionate about. Why be shocked. If you can afford it then there is no issue. I know blokes who spend (or should I say get loans) to buy $100,000 boats so they can go fishing, or spend anywhere up to $10,000 every time they buy a new motorbike (which can be six monthly). Astronomy is our hobby and we are lucky enough that we can spend very little to get such satisfaction from it and you don't end up smelling like fish or covered in mud. Maybe just a bit tipsy from a nice scotch we sometimes enjoy waiting for exposure runs to finish.

I bought my way too expensive gear at the beginning of 2014 with some of my super. I am still learning to use it (got the scope and mount sussed - now for the ccd / guide camera). The good news is that I bought it all when there was parity between the US and Aus dollars. I could probably sell it now and make a profit but I won't. I enjoy the learning, the company and it slows my brain fossilization.;)

Amaizing amounts more than 1st thought - I was grinding mirrors 20 yrs ago, $100 for good 10" blanks, 100 on grits, polish ect & a whole lot of manual grinding.
Now-a-days with technology, astro is amazing, but my back pocket struggles more, being on a carers pension last 10 yrs since missus's spinal injury.
I can say Ive used near 10k in the last 3 yrs, not much by average normal means, but a Ship load for this duck :juggle:

This is really not a topic many people would feel like discussing in a public forum for a number of 'personal reasons'; but for the generations living their lives in social media who crave having their lives totally exposed for all to watch - then of course they will share, and the higher the number the better for the envy factor.

If that's you, then better get everything insured.

I have spend a lot of money on Astronomy equipment over the last 50 years, and wasted a heck of a lot of money on other things.

Judging by some of my imaging results not enough ...
To replace probably 10k but seeing as I acquired quite a bit or hardware gratis and built a lot more maybe 6-7k.
Some things just ain't worth trying to build.

But I enjoy trying ... :D

SWMBO doesn't mind, I manage my time for us and the clouds seem to manage it even more.

But as others have said I agree with the pleasure it has given me in many ways. And I could be spending a heck of a lot more on other pursuits, used to have a boat that got used about twice a year, now THERE was wasted money.

I’m wondering how many have conflated what they have spent, vs the replacement cost in current $, vs estimated secondhand value if sold.

Could be time some changed their vote, if they’ve made a significant purchase or sold a lot of gear.

If I tried to replace it, I'd be on the wrong side of $50K, by a long margin. When the $Au = $US 1.10... I chose wisely...:)

I've bought most of my gear secondhand.. I'm not sure I want to know how much I spent buying secondhand gear, let alone what it might be worth if I had bought it all new....

I'd also prefer my wife didn't find out.. although, I suspect she might already know...:D

Just noticed this thread, so I figured I'd see just what it'd cost to replace all my gear.
While my kit isn't exactly large or expensive, replacing it would cost somewhat more than what I originally paid in 2018.
The binoculars in my sig were a gift, and finding equivalent condition, identical capability, replacements on ebay, would be exceedingly difficult, at best. So I've left them out of the calculations.

An oldie but a goodie... When I die don't let my spouse sell the Astro gear for what I told them it cost me.... just as well no names are in that poll or they may have met an early demise at the hands of their spouse!

Or a small (27ft) old classic cutter wooden yatch:)

Only cost me $5000 to buy, then $4000 to get it up after it sank, $4000 each time on the slip but only $200 a month mooring fees which was cheap..then weekly purchases at Bunnings of around $150 to $250 for tools and materials....and if I went ahead to have it restored it would have cost $80 to $100 K to end up with a market value of only $25k...and folk think I was crazy to give it away...it was due for a $6000 slip so that giveaway paid for half my astro gear:P

I have not totalled my stuff but maybe $1750 to $1875....ruffly;) maybe a little bit more if you include everything past the binos and the dslr:D

Heck I could spend more but thank goodness I am content with things...at the moment:)

So if I had $100,000 to throw at it...mmmm...get the old boat back and totally restore it of course:lol:
