Skywatcher 200mm reflector....

I am thinking about buying this unit with the full Synscan kit to go with it. http://www.langwoodsphotography.com/eshop/product.php?productid=20&cat=5&page=1

Uses for this scope would be visual to start and AP to follow.

My main concern is the the new generation eq5-deluxe mount is sufficient for astrophotography.

Anyone have a similar rig or know how the mount would cope with this scope?

I had thought of importing a telescope but by the time shipping and customs tarrifs are taken into account there isnt a lot to be gained.

The 8" Newton a GoTo equipped EQ5 would be a great visual scope.

Might be pushing it a bit for astrophotography when you add extra weight of guidescope, camera etc.

200mm newt on an EQ6 would be preferable for imaging. Sorry, more $$$ I know - but that's astrophotography!!!!

Great advice from Doug. I basically have this set up and it is very good, although I only do photography with it. It is a Bintel N200:)

For astrophotography, the 8" will be a bit too heavy for the mount. It'll be fine if you're just using it for visual though.

Nice to have another Kiwi along here. I'll add my 2 cents worth.

I have a Skywatcher 8" reflector but on a Dob mount so I can't speak for the astrophotography side of things. I have had good reviews regarding the optics on mine from people when comparing different scopes at observing nights etc. (one was even an Australian so it must be right;) )
It is an excellent scope for visual observing. I'm not sure how popular sky watcher is in Australia but seems to be getting good press here.

I bought mine through the same place as you are looking and found them to be very helpful and approachable.

Hi ! ditto as with Gary from the mainland - Chris from Albany, Auckland. Thats actually a good price for that setup in N.Z. Are you sure it comes with the Skyscan kit ? it does not state it in the advertising. The Skyscan upgrade kit is $NZ700 extra. If it does not it is still a reasonable price.
Just to confirm the above comments - great for visual. The S.W. 8in. F/5 has excellent optical and build qualities. Basic A.P. mounts in N.Z. are not cheap - a S.W. HEQ5 is about $1900 and the best option HEQ6 is about $2400.
It makes good sense to invest in the best mount you can and then build on that.
Our 'hobby' is not cheap.! :whistle:
