Secondhand book from a smoker's home

I have had some secondhand copies of Burnham's three volumes as my out-in-the-field versions, which I picked up for $1 each from the US some time ago.

Unfortunately one of them has come from a smoker's house and for a non-smoker, the smell is distinct and revolting, but it is amazing how you get use to it. And the smell has started to permeate into the neighbouring books.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to get rid of the smell?

My initial thoughts was placing the book in a sealed cupboard with a tray of good ol' fashioned bi-carb. It works on the fridge!

I have also left it out in the open air for days on end. That didn't really help.

Any other suggestions.

I think there is a vanilla spray that works.

Throw it away? It's not rare, you have more, and you paid $1. Not a big loss.
Why let it ruin other books while you try to fix it.

Errr, well you could take up smoking I guess, that would fix the problem, :P sorry couldn't help myself, :whistle: no offence intended. ;)

Get another copy. Those sorts of books aren't allowed on my bookcase, especially since I have rare editions like an 1892 version of Don Quixote (4 volume, leather bound set).

Place the book into a paper bag full of Bicarbonte Soda, and leave it for a while.

I use ozone to get rid of bad odours, problem is getting the machines. OK, so I have several.And no, an O III filter will not do:P . You may find one of those mini ozone fridge deodourisers could work. Keep it in a sealed container to beef up the ozone concentration .Allow the ozone to penetrate between the pages. Best of luck - stale smoke is totally GROSS.
