Does anyone know of any good on-line resources for finding out general information, interesting facts and technical data about celestial objects?

Hi Phil,
For starters try:
http://www.ngcicproject.org/
http://www.univie.ac.at/webda/information.html
http://www.geocities.com/ariane1au/index.htm (highly recommended)
http://venus.mporzio.astro.it/~marco/gc/
and I'd normally recommend
http://www.blackskies.org/index1.html
but someone seems to have hacked it. Hope it'll be back soon.
That's a start anyway!
Best,
Les D
If you don't intend writing a thesis, wikipedia has lots of info.
From the wikipedia home page, try the searches ...
List of stars by constellation
List of globular clusters
List of galaxy clusters
List of Messier objects
List of NGC objects

For Messier object info http://www.seds.org/Messier/indexes.html is also a pretty good resource
