Hi all

I played with my new DMK31 today - through my trusty Solarmax 40. It was quite frustrating as the clouds hung around for most of the afternoon - it was of course clear this morning but I was out shopping - arrrrgh!
Every time I left the scope there was a break in the clouds - but eventually with about 40 minutes of sun left it cleared and I 'hopped' all over the Sun.
I am OK imaging filaments and sunspots (when they are about) but I am hopeless at prominence - and there were 4+ good ones today - I tried and have included all of my images from today.

Nice filament
Four prominence
and almost a full disc at prime focus

I hope you enjoy.

Nice work Matt! Boy, that's soooo close to a full frame! I don't think you're doing to bad with the proms:thumbsup:. They look good. If you take a surface shot of the sun at the same place and then layer mask the surface and the prom, it makes an excellent image;).

I was quite tempted to try out the DMK 41 with the PST this morning, but the wind was atrocious - about force 5 and gusting to force 7 (measured officially on my weather station:P)! I figured it was best to keep the POD closed...

Nice work Matt, I must use that Solarmax of mine again. Your images have reminded me that I should get into solar imaging again.

Thanks gents.

Hey Al, I guess I need PS to layer mask - a tool I do not have. Any cheap options?

Matt,

I haven't tried it myself, but try "the GIMP":

At least it's the right price;).

Hi Matt

That’s a mighty fine series of images mate! 10 out of 10 for determination as the sun was certainly playing hide and seek today in Brisbane! Those prominences are amazing!

Excellent Matt

That filament seems to be very volatile, some of us in Europe imaged it on saturday and in each one it had changed shape, and its different again in yours!

Proms are always going to be hard. Especially when theres cirrus around making the fainter ones blend into the background sky. They also die if the seeing is anyway bad so try to image early in the morning. I dont think youve got much to improve on with these images though. To get more detail the DDMK21 would be better - better resolution and higher frame rate.

Paint Shop Pro X is a great and cheap alt to PS

Feel free to PM me any time if you have a specific Q.

Nice images Matt,

Looks like there's a skidmark on the Sun and the loop in image 5 look great.

Cheers
