Moon from today

Moon from today with my setup. Not quite perfect on focus. I guess live view would be nice...and yes, I deliberately framed it with clouds.

Edit2~ I would like to debate you on the focus, looks spot on to my eyes and they arn't the worst!

Live view would be handy to focus in real time, rather than take a shot, zoom in, check focus, re-focus, take another shot, rinse and repeat. Plus, you can zoom in and focus at the same time, bonus.

Composition - I thank nature.

As to sharpness, it's a bit soft, I did some smart sharpen @ 160% on the full size tif and then some smaller amounts of smart sharpen after resizing to 1024*768. I don't usually like to sharpen this much and to my eyes it looks a bit oversharpened.

I must say I've had the scope out like Six times in the past 3 weeks, been feeling up to it, had some good clear skies to boot and I'm getting motivated about imaging. An ex work mate Nick can be thanked for getting my enthusiasm sparked again.

That may be, but give me an eye piece any day. I mean, how clinical can you go?
Live view may make it "easier" but is that necessarily what you want?
Half the challenge I believe, is capturing the shot with a fair degree of difficulty.

Live view would only "take away" from my task ahead. Maybe that is just me though. ;)

Well done. That's a really great image, and love the detail in the craters you've caught. The sharpening you've applied seems to have done a good job. Great definition.



As for the comment about not needing LiveView, wait until you start imaging DSO's. You will come to appreciate what LiveView can do for you. Rather than waste 30 minutes of precious imaging time (as used to be the case when using just DSLR Focus), it takes about 3 minutes, with a Bahtinov mask and LiveView at 200%. A godsend if ever there were one.

As for the difficulty side of it, you should ditch your DSLR and start shooting film again. The way the purists did. ;)

Oh, don't get me wrong Humayun, I was purely talking as to the image in question. Lunar photography etc. By no means was I wishing to imply that "live view", is no less than necessary for other astrophotography means. I was simply trying to encourage that the user, to get the most out of the out-dated technology available.

You are right though, I should really crack open some film and get the two SLR's I have here working... They also still have their merits. I have a 1920's full timber tripod, photo box. Sorry I am mis-terming here. It is a large 40cm square camera which takes photo-sensitive paper, I think... I would really love to give that a go.... Not sure if you can get the paper's any more though.

hehehe. Mitchell, it's probably an 8 x 10 sheet camera. I must got a Toyo view camera one day...
