I think I have finally got on top of the variables with EasyHDR.
Here is an image of the Lagoon and Trifid 10MB.

Let me know what you think.
It was Alex (Alexn) that pointed out where I was going wrong. Sometimes when you are so close to something you cannot see clearly! In my blindness I was tending to use too much compression.

Thanks Dave. Below is a screen grab from ImagesPlus. It has this nifty function where you can get a plot of image brightness. I used it to work out what was going on.

That looks fantastic Bert! The Milky way looks sensational and the nebulae both look very nice and detailed, with good contrast against the starfield...
Glad my ramblings were useful! :)

Ah yes now you have cracked it. Some of the previous images tended to be a bit dark. This one is perfect.
Fabulous top notch image.

Impressive, Bert!

Absolutely stunning Bert! What a superb rendition of the region. I was starting to wish I could see your widefield shots for the background in Starry Night, but then realised I'd be getting false expectations I could actually shoot something like that....:)
