NGC6334 Cat's Paw from Astrofest

Trying out CS4 for processing my images. Still learning obviously, but I am quite happy with this result for first go. Suspect I've gone a little too dark on the right there, but there are some darker patches inside the image more so maybe not. I didn't take any flats, just darks.

Nice image. I think the dark patch at upper right is a dark nebula B257 not sure about the one bottom right though I imagine others will know.

Thats a great image Troy, i would make the red a little more vibrant, but only very slightly, but its a great image mate, well done

That's really nice Troy.
It is a bit dark there to the right. You should be able to tease some detail out of there with curves. Just adjust a little bit at a time.
I've got to add it to my "to do" list now.

Thanks guys and gal. I'm very happy with the capture, probably my best to date. I can see potential in the image, but don't think my processing is making the most of it. I'll keep tinkering.

Peter - I've already Carbonified my CS4, but yet to play with them. :)

flats are important - they can make or break your image. nice shot. try getting the free version of Pixinsight (the LE version) and you can use the Dynamic background extraction function to help even out your image - -without the flat

youve gone deep there. i encourage you to use a full calibration on your images, otherwise you throw away just so much quality.

Quick familiarisation with the interface and some subtle differences in ways of doing things, but my experience with GIMP certainly helps. Most of the above editing is levels and curves so far. At Astrofest, [1ponders] showed some of us the basic idea, but occasionally he'd quickly throw in a really cool step to find what colour adjustment you needed using some other tool or whatever and I don't recall how he did some of that yet. Just need to tinker some more.

Nice Troy. :cool2: There is a fair bit of dark neb to the right so it will be more challenging to process. Trying to get the sky dark without the Dark Neb turning black isn't easy at times.
