I loved seeing the fantastic pics Bird and others posted here earlier in the month. I eventually managed to stay up late Fri 31/7 until the region of impact became visible. I was convinced I could glimse a dark area in moments of decent seeing, so ran off some AVIs with the ToUcam.

Registax is still a dark mystery to me, even after learning quite a bit working through Paul Haese's excellent walkthrough on his website.

Anyway, here's the best I could do:

Jupiter 1/8/09 1:45 AEST
406 frames captured at 5 fps in K3CCDTools
ToUcam through 1.25" 2x Barlow + 2nd 2" 2x Barlow (FL 4000mm)
Umm - I'm not sure what the final number of frames was
Wavelets in Registax and some Unsharp mask in Photoshop

(Been a bit busy with work/home/astrofest etc to find time to work on this)
Thanks for looking....

Looks a little grainy on my screen, Rob...but a very nice image just the same.

Well done:thumbsup:

That a top effort Rob, nice sharp limb, Wesley impact and some nice detail. Looks a tad grainy but I reckon you could reduce the noise with Despeckle in PS.

Overall I think you have done very well with this image.

Trevor

Cheers Matt - I'm sure I pushed a wavelets bit too much, but wanted to try and show some swirls in the pale equatorial band (if that's what its called...), and just don't have the skill yet to do it neater (assuming my data would actually allow anyway).

Thanks Trevor - always a buzz to get a thumbs up from you. Pretty pleased to see the impactor given my hodge-podge of gear, and really only knowing enough to be dangerous in this game. Its tantalising how much detail I might be able to glean through the 8 inch now. I guess the mirror would have been at its best by nearly 2am. I'll be back for more efforts!

Nice one Rob,

Good idea on the double barlow, your image scale leaves my 3 x ED for dead, even when I have a 4" bigger mirror.....hmmmm.

Great image, well done, details are awesome

Very very nice Rob. You'd have to be feeling chuffed about this one.
btw, condolences on not winning the AF comp at Astrofest. Many thought your m31 the best.

Aside from a little grain in the image, this is a good solid effort, you have captured the strike well and lots of other detail. Rare for Brisbane.

Thanks Chris - I was sorely tempted by a 5x Powermate up for grabs at Astrofest, but it would be a bit of a luxury for the little planetary I do - still......

Thanks JJJ - and also for suggesting I enter the AF comp. My M31 is a bit rough when you get up close and personal with it - was great to have a go though!

Thanks Paul! I was determined to read and learn more about Registax, but I wouldn't have got anywhere near this far without your tutorial workthrough. And I know you emphasise not to push wavelets too far - but I just HAD to see a little bit more.....:)
