G'day everyone,

Since this weather won't let up to get any new images done, I thought I'd share some of my very early attempts at Jupiter.
At the time I was just tinkering around with Regisatx, not really knowing what I was doing.
Not that I know more now. :ashamed:

Anyway here they are, all taken thru the LX200 12" with Toucam.

Cheers.

Nice images Andrew. The disc of the Gallilean moon is quite impressive.

Thank you Phil, Dennis and Trevor for your encouraging words.

I can't wait for the weather to clear so I can have a shot at Mars.
So far Ive only imaged Jupiter.

And after Mars comes Saturn.
I've been taking notes of ICE's work on Mars. '
His work is fantastic.

Nice shots RB, wasn't there a recent Jupiter you posted when you first joined? That one was sensational!

I got up at 1am this morning to do Mars, but it was only clear for 5 minutes before the clouds rolled in. I should've been up at 12am :( No jetstream either, stars weren't twinkling, seeing would've been GOOD!

Maybe you should reprocess some of those early AVI's, apply what you know now and see if you get a better result!

Yeah Mike that was the last one of the season. It turned out to be the best one.

I caught a glimps last night and the seeing was good. But clouds rolled in.

I'll try. I don't think I kept the avi's but I'll check.

Cheers.

Very nice RB, Regisatx and stacking images are a mystery to me.

Thanks Dave and Mick,

Mick- Registax is a little intimedating at first. I read a great "how to" article in S&T (US) that explained alot. Then I just keep trying different setting.
It's an amazing app.

Andrew, with that 12" you should maybe consider some tweeking of the collimation. The images are good but look a little soft in collimation to me. Might also be the wavelets not being hard enough. Still practice does make perfect. And the damnable seeing is always an issue.

Here is one I reprocessed from earlier in the year. Just goes to show what can happen when everything comes together. If you want any tips on collimation or Registax3 settings please let me know. I am more than happy to help.

Cheers Paul,

You're right about collimation. I was in such a hurry I didn't collimate.
Thanks for your help. When it comes time again I will call on you.

That is ONE AWESOME image mate.

Yeah I was lucky that night. Just remember to collimate, collimate and collimate. Your only a small step away. Next step after that is the very large one to Bird's Height.

wet days = good times for reprocessing - i agree!

here is my reprocessing of my first go in august of jupiter.

It is amazing what tips from Rumples and Iceman can do for your registax techniques.

Very smooth asimov, try dropping the gamma a little and maybe doing a little deconvolution. Should come up a treat. Still very good though.

That is excellent! It looks very 3D. Coooool!

So the next dumb question from me, all of your scopes have been collimated very well, or is it the seeing that is the key to these shots?

davidpretorius
22-10-2005, 10:05 PM
asimov's newt would be collimated well as he is very good at collimation, but seeing on a planet i would have thought to be more important

asimov
22-10-2005, 10:16 PM
I've found collimation to be crucial for planetary work. weather it be visual or photographic. I can't speak for photographing DSOs but I hesitate to say collimation for visual DSOs....you don't need to be anywhere near as fussy for these. At least that's what I've found.

IE: I've looked at jupiter with the newt way out of collimation, & it was a terrible view....turn the scope to a glob or even M42 & I could'nt detect the difference between good collimation & cra....crummy collimation.

BTW My jupe shot is 6 shots I took 2 yrs ago before I knew about stacking. The originals were VERY mediocre shots, taken while I was still learning the ropes with the kodak. Can't remember what the seeing was like @ the time. Not good by looking at the originals.

H0ughy, both are critical. Collimation and seeing go hand in hand. Point having good seeing with bad collimation. My scope is under constant tweeking to achieve perfection in collimation.

Nice ones Asi and Davo,
Thanks Kearn and Louie,

This is so much fun, the more you try the more you discover.
I agree with you Paul, 101 %.
Collimation and seeing play a huge part in the final quality.
Although I am guilty in not taking the time to collimate the SCT,
partly because I was in a hurry and partly because I use to be scared :scared: .
I know, I know :ashamed:

Andrew, collimation is less scary on an SCT than on a Newtonian. I know what you are saying though. First time I collimated was after installing bobs knobs, and the scope was all over the place. But I had collimated Newtonians before and thought how hard could it be?

h0ughy
23-10-2005, 11:52 AM
I need to have a few lessons on this, one so I dont stuff up and two , i have the bobs knobs but haven't installed them yet for the first reason. Vicious circle :wink2:

Just follow the instructions to a T, Make sure you only change one screw at a time. That is most important. It is actually very easy to do, don't be scared.

RB
23-10-2005, 02:20 PM
Yeah what Paul said.

They are very easy to install Dave but follow the instructions exactly.
Once installed they are a pleasure to use. What I find difficult, appart from the fear that I will tighten/loosen too far is, on the 12" it's impossible to reach to the front and adjust while looking through the EP.

But now you and I will both take a deep breath and go for it, right Dave?

 Oh nooooooooo I just cracked the corrector........

Not trying to hijack your thread Rocketboy. But you've got me on a roll re-processing wise. :) Searched the puter & came up with 3 more below average joop shots from a coupla years ago. I stacked em' & came up with this image. Got a lot of noise & has that grainy look but oh well. Hence the smaller the image the better it looks lol.

davidpretorius
23-10-2005, 05:04 PM
asijoop, had a go at your jupiter with astral image and a LR deconvolution with 3 & 1.3 and then recombined them

not sure if it is an improvement with the colour or not?????

Hi Dave. Was wondering if you were around today or not.

Nice job!! It's a toss-up as to which final image I prefer!? Either or?

I have a teething problem Re: the lappy & registax that I may PM you about shortly.?

You're more than welcome asimov, I like to see what people can do.
I like your image, it's got amazing detail for a 3 image stack !!!
