M42 in the very wee hours this morning. With the new (second Hand) Ed 120. (I should say thanks Sad!)

12 x 1 min lights, 1000d, ISO 800, 7 darks, 25 bias frames.
Stacked in Deep Sky Stacker and finished off in Gimp.
Due to weather and a bit of a planetary bug, this is my first deep sky object for ages.

I'm reasonably happy with the result.

Nice and sharp.

The best plan for imaging M42 is to take a series of core shots of maybe 15 seconds and then a series of long exposure shots 5 to 10minutes even 15. Then use Photoshop layers to blend in the 15 sec core shot which will be overexposed in the 10min shots.

There is a tutorial on the net about how to do that exactly.

Nice first light. Glad to see someone starting on Orion. Still a few trees in the way as yet.

Sounds nasty, over it yet? :P

It's one of those targets you need to do separate exp times and layer in PS with masks to get the full dynamic range.
