Baz.
Baz,
it may look interesting, - don't be fooled.
I won a pair of tickets to see this somehow just by clicking on a few links on the cinema website. But I can assure you that if I'd paid for the tickets, I would have been hammering on the manager's door for my money back.
Those that do choose to see it may notice a distinct similarity to how things were back in the apartheid days, - without giving the plot away.
Cheers

I really liked District 9.
As a youngling and non-movie buff, it was to me, unique and it has very interesting and cool concepts and awesome weapons.
I found the universe in the movie interesting, and wish they had some novels to back the movie because it has so many possibilities. The same goes for the characters.

It got some good reviews, 4.5/5 in the sunday telegraph.
Says something for Sunday Telegraph readers :P
Personally I'd rather have my gonads beaten paper thin with a claw hammer than sit through it again ;)

mmm you guys are making me rethink my decision to see this....it had better be good! I am sure I'll like it...I can watch anything (just about) since I don't try to analyse anything and I don't care who is in it or directed it etc.

I saw it on the weekend, i thought it was a great movie. I dont know why but it reminded me alot of Blade Runner, not the atmosphere but just how it made me feel.
Its hard to talk about without spoilers, but i have people that just blurt them out, so i wont.
But i will say damn i want one of the guns in the movie, it never got old :D
For those who want to know more about the movie, it is critiqued online in New Scientist ...

I thought this movie was ok, my friends loved it. A bit gory at times though, unnecessarily so..
Apart from the South African setting and the parallels to apartheid you realise it's all been done before. Still worth a viewing though

Just viewed it tonight. Nearly 2 hours. Won't give it away, but as above the weapons are awesome. Gets a bit squeamish. :D
But it took me 1/2 a movie to like it. The mood of the movie and it's intentions changed at the half way point.
Just be open minded and not think too hard on what everyone has reviewed or critiqued it so closely.
Funny as hell with the "mocked porn" pics scene, ahhh the media always puts a spin on the reality of the real story...... hahahaha...
I think I have the "seouth afreeecan" accent now. :D

District 9 Was a "Top" Movie last night.
There were some gory bits, but overall the cinematography was excellent. The Doco-Journalism style in which it was shot was very effective.
The story was thick and powerful, strong theme and was an intriguing ride along interracial, humanitarian lines. The transformation of the main characters attitudes as he went through his experiences was nicely done too.
It's funny, I took several people along with me and their opinions varied greatly. One said it was cr... and too gory, while others were raving at how 'Different" it was from the norm.
I for one, reckon "Different" is the key here.
Although the SFX and weaponry was not the focus, they were fantastic and way different than what we are normally used to seeing. One or two of them were quite spectacular and innovative.
The choice of Johannesburg, SA for filming was inspired and made the whole movie almost believable, as if this was actually going on and has been for quite some time in another country.
I give it four out of five stars.

I just got back from seeing this with work colleagues.
It is an amazing film. Can you imagine, they did the entire movie on a $30 million budget? Insane.
Loved every moment.

My wife and I saw it last night (Father's Day) and she did not fall asleep for a single millisecond...which is saying something, she will even fall asleep in a movie she has chosen to see.
We both agreed that "different" is a very apt description. Although the doco/journalistic approach at the start went a little long, maybe trim it by 5 minutes, the whole movie moved continuously. I think the choice of South Africa was great based on its history of apartheid. Without telling you the plot, it is essentially about discrimination, equality, apartheid, the Nazis versus the Jews and a lot of other important social issues.
I for one am never going to sniff rocket fuel again! I am assuming there will be a sequel in three years time!
I give it four and a half out of five.
Best movie I have seen in ages, and definitely the best Sci Fi movie in years.
9/10

I caught it last week - it wasn't what I expected (Independence Day, two hours twenty minutes of typical whoa is us until America saves the day). This movie actually had me thinking about it for quite a few days after.
It has excellent satire, social commentary and acting. It isn't typical Hollywood, it feels gritty, raw and not mass produced. You felt like you were there - with not cute and charimisatic folk ready to save the day.
Overall a powerful movie that was well done. Not everyone's cup of tea - a thinking movie - I'd give it 8/10.

Saw it last night with a mate - wow. Very gritty, documentary style was done very well. Lead actor was excellent, job well done. Alien SFX looked a bit dodgy imho (more general movement wise than close up shots), but that is my only criticism. Excellent story, direction was well done, cinematrogaphy average, alien technology rocked. Really enjoyed it, defintely a DVD grab when it comes out.
Any news on a sequel?
Dave
The director is open to a sequel but no news yet (after trawling the internet looking for anything on it).
maybe he will make Halo first...

I hope they do a sequel, be interesting to see more. A few interesting things:
1) why did the alien ship come to Earth? I presume that it had some troubles and had to find the closest planet that could sustain the alien species whilst repairs were made.
2) why did the command module leave the mothership so early on? I presume so that it would protect the mothership's technology from the humans.
3) 20 years to collect fuel? mmm.
4) some of the aliens (Christopher as an example) are intelligent, rational with solid morals. Other aliens are just well, troublemakers with little regard for anything except themselves. I had the impression that the aliens came to Earth not realising it had an evolved species already on it, but by the time they got here it was too late to go elsewhere. So they mostly played subservient and docile to wait out the 20 years it would take to refuel the mothership. Maybe some of the alien species got bored and went stir crazy?
5) the aliens that were shown being found on the mothership looked like they lived in squalor. I wonder why?
6) with such advanced weaponry, I was surprised at how docile they were. Especially with such large numbers of aliens.
I had a good chat about all of this with my mate last night. I see parallels between the aliens and humans - most humans are well behaved, but some are troublemakers, the same going for the aliens it seems.
I was quite impressed with the alien weaponry being biometrically tied into the alien's DNA. Very cleverly done. The racial discrimination side of thigns was very well done imho - showing the scant regard for life that is so common in these types of situations.
Sorry, but I couldn't help but voice my thoughts on the movie :)

I got the impression that something pretty bad must have happened to them before coming to earth, forcing them to remain stranded here. They seemed to exhibit a hive mentality, requiring direction from a ranking class, perhaps a queen who was dead. Leaderless and without direction, locked away in their spaceraft, these poor dumb creatures were rescued from their squalor to be placed by us in an equally grimy situation.
Looks like the thinking class were few and far between, facing huge challenges to get back on plan before being discovered. Perhaps the fuel they were after was a rare substitute for something they had run out of.

sorry to go against the tide but i really didn't like it..i thought there were a few too many stereotypes in the characters, both alien & SA'can. I know it is already setup for sequel - with the ship coming back..i thought the cat food thing was not a great part of the plot either
