View Full Version here: : Jupiter August 15
Conditions were not bad tonight. Very high humidity, but quite calm at ground level.
After taking a look at the jetstream maps I wasn't originally going to set up but I decided to have a crack anyway. I backed off a little from a 3x barlow to a 2.5x powermate, due to the seeing.
I'm not overly happy with the processing on this one. I think I pushed the data a little too hard in wavelets in Registax.
Anyway...it's all good fun.

Lots of detail, looks good Matt! Did you continue to capture after the bird strike came into view?

Hi Matt
Nice capture! I also had a look at the jet stream map and when I stepped outside, the stars were twinkling quite madly so I gave Jupiter a miss! Its not often you have to downsize from the x3 to the x2.5, so that alone is quite telling.
None the less, good work for those less than ideal conditions. It certainly was humid – I had condensation streaming off the OTA!
Cheers

Nice image Matt with good detail.
Thanks all.
No. I packed up after only a few runs. The seeing turned quite bad soon after this image was captured.
:thumbsup::thumbsup: nice pic Matt :)

Nice job Matt,
I think it looks good considering the conditions, plenty of detail and in my opinion, not over processed.
Regards
Trevor
I suppose it's a 'taste' thing, Trevor.
Here's an image I've put together during the same capture session using the 3x Televue barlow.
As you can see, it's a lot 'softer'. I prefer the colour, however.

That's a very good image, Matt. Nothing to complain about there.

Not a bad image Matt, colour needs some adjustment in my opinion but other than that the processing seems ok. I think you are finding that Brisbane (as I found living there 20 odd years ago) that seeing there is always on the ordinary side. It is indeed rare when the seeing is co-operating. The reason being that the jet stream parks over that region during winter and the interaction with the jet stream and the layers below tends to make for fast seeing. The wind sheer is quite steep there.
Anyway, you make the best of a bad situation. Well done.
Thanks all.
I agree. The colour's slightly off. Particularly the second image which looks a little green, perhaps?
It was tough getting the colour balance right on these. For some reason the image was all over the shop when I combined the R, G and blue channels. I'll have to experiment a little more, because I've had fairly accurate colours up until now and I'm really not doing anything differently in my routine:shrug:
I'm certainly aware of the seeing issues presented here in Brisbane. I've been here 2 years, and it's been pretty poor the entire time. It's given me plenty to grizzle about:lol:
And yes...you can only do your best with what you're given. I'm sure it will all prove invaluable practice for a night of wonderful seeing if/when it arrives.....
Cheers.
