Certainly does look like a great night, i live in gippsland 2hrs east of Melb and it is also very clear, the sky is very transparent with the great big bulge clearly overhead, Jupiter looks almost like someone popped a flare up in the sky it is so bright, only problem is i cant get out tonight i have really bad vertigo from an ear infection:sadeyes:, but to all the other Victorian astronuts, rug up and enjoy while you can:thumbsup:

I'm heading down your way tomorrow near Woodside :driving: , let's hope it stays like this for the weekend.

I'm not out there. A whole stack of bloody high cloud moved in just before sunset and is visibly ruining transparency. :mad2: So tonight is a writeoff, absolutely sucks. Might aswell be a freaking hurricane

And the forecast has nothing but cloud and 10,000 knot winds for the outlook period :mad2:

So it's pretty much the usual melborune situation.

Useless :mad2:

Yes it's not too bad. Got the scope out.

Got the scope out for 3 hours here in Colac, no clouds, nice and still about 7 deg (nearly tropical for this place!). Had a ball, knocked over 3 new objects for my Messier list (M15, M2 and M29). Also enjoyed 47tuc, the Ring and Dumbell and a bit of a look at ol' Jove. M29 was a killer, very low and trying to pick it up between branch of trees, but I got it.

Probably the most enjoyable night out in the last 6 weeks. The previous night was one of those "teaser" night. All these little clouds moving in and out and forming just where yoiu want to look!

Forecast for the next 2 nights down here is not good but should improve after that.

I couldn't get much detail from Jupiter, I think there was some very high cloud. I packed up after 1 hour.

There was high cloud. At sunset the sky was just covered. Just typical, there might aswell have been a freaking hurricane for filthy bloody hell's sake.

Oh yes and I can't see today reaching 21C, bloody thick overcast already, so the heat will conveniently bypass Melbourne on it's way from Adelaide to Sydney as per bloody usual.

what a disaster, what dispicable rubbish :mad2:

There is one chance, on Tuesday night. That's it, that will be this month's quota, if it ends up being clear.

If you add up the cost of your equipment divided by the amount of clear sky that you use for astronomy here in Melbourne, it costs about $500 per hour ! LOL

There is no way in hell that there is as many as 9 hours of clear sky per year in Melbourne

The black stuff is called night sky.

Too late to set up the scope. Sony a200, 70mm, 30sec. Sydney's light pollution more or less removed

Actually an almost clear sky as I drove home. Looking good - but I had to spend the night indoors on the computer!

Just checked - gloriously clear, clean and beautifully crisp night outside. But, bedtime

I was out there, pulled an all nighter, (well until 3.30am when clouds rolled in - what a surprise  ).

Seeing was poor but transparency was improving throughout the night. Dew was starting up about 2 hours in but by a stroke of luck a light breeze started blowing and all dew was instantly removed :D

So a little less that absolutely tragic weather, Sab? :D

Good, we'll watch for your observation report with interest!

Well, last night makes night 2 since April with not tragic weather :P Actually I was tearing my hair out as even less than an hour before sunset it was overcast in typical Melbourne style. Since Melbourne is a sub-arctic maritime climate, like Iceland, the Shetlands, the Aluetian Islands and Macquarie Island, you just cannot predict whether or not these clouds are gonna stay, then suddenly clear, then come back in platoons throughout the nioght. But the night was fully clear miraculously.

Wish me luck for Saturday - I'm going to "chance my arm" at Snake Valley armed with Bambo's 600 southern delights embedded in the Argo Navis. :)
