Adaptive/Active Optics

Hi all!
I would like to know the difference between active and adaptive optics.
I already know (believe) that the main difference is the correctional speed but I don't know in detail how they work in order to improve the resolution.
The sources I have tried have all described them differently, I would appreciate any relevant information,

A distinction without a difference I think. I've only seen 'active' optics on a couple of photo-forums, used to describe what telescopians call "adaptive optics". Usually in reference to image stabilisation, which is essentialy the same, i.e. one set of optical elements move contrary to, or independent of, another, in order to clarify the image.
The speed shouldn't matter
Could be wrong. Usually am.
