Hello to everyone, my name is Michael (located in Perth) and i am looking at buying my first telescope. I don't really know which one to buy and i would really like some feedback in relation to what options i have for my price range ($2000) and what books or websites i should read to assist me in learning more about this great hobby.

Thank you for your time and feedback

Michael

Hi Michael,

welcome to IIS :welcome:

Firstly, a few questions.

Do you want to just use the scope for visual, or for astrophotography as well?
Do you want mainly portable or not so important?
Do you want computerised 'goto' type operation, or are you happy to point it yourself?

Many here would say join a club first and have a look through other people's scopes. Good advice, but you're limited to ASWA or AGWA here in Perth. I'm not in either btw.

Have you thought about a decent pair of binoculars and a mount to sit them on? These are a great way to start observing the night sky. Also these would be good for both terrestrial and sky viewing.

So, you can see there are a few questions that need answering first. Once you've thought about these things, you'll find you've eliminated a whole range of options which will make it easier to choose from the remainder.

Cheers for now

Hi Michael, :welcome: to IceInSpace!

Paul has asked all the right questions, so I'll leave it there for now. :)

G'day Makevel, :hi: & :welcome:, mate.

Ditto Paul & Mike's words.

You also an put the word out here in IIS to find boys & girls with whom to get together with there in Perth. There is a strong & passionate mob of them who are members here & I'm sure they would like to help (& spend your money,). Hey, you might instigate a star party!

It will be nice to put you on the right track from the start,.
