First Moon Shot DSLR

This is the first decent shot I've taken of the moon, just with my Canon EOS 400D and my partner's EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens. Definitely not as good as a lot I've seen here but I was extremely excited when I took these! Also got to capture Jupiter as a tiny bright blob but the exposures left ugly trails and weren't very clear.

That is a very nicely processed image of the Moon, especially for a (hand held?) 300mm tele lens. You’ve managed the extremes of brightness very well – top job!

The prominent craters Clavius, Tycho, Copernicus, Plato are very well captured.

Very nice shot.

If you have a tripod and a remote control for the camera, try taking some wide angle, long exposure shots. If you can get to a spot away from the city lights, even better. This will be much easier than trying to get a closeup of the planets.

It's also good practice in case you decide to upgrade to a telescope later.

I live on acreage about 35-40 mins from the city so light pollution is not as much of a problem. I'll definitely give that a go next time I get out to view. Thanks James!

And Dennis, I used a tripod for this shot and put it on self timer for 10 seconds to remove any camera shake.

That's a great shot for a 300mm telephoto!

For Jupiter and its moons, try a 1.5 sec exposure at 1600 iso or thereabouts. That works nicely with my Pentax 70-300 telephoto.

Thanks Frank! I think it'll be a good night for it. I tried to get a good shot of the moon last night but my image wasn't sharp enough because I wasn't using my tripod and just had my kit telephoto. It's all fun to practice though!
