Hi All,
Just a reminder that I will be giving an astronomy presentation on August 15th at the Bendigo Discovery Science & Technology Centre.
The theme of my presentation will be my journey in astronomy. How an ex mine worker from Broken Hill came to observe with the Keck telescopes, "From Broken Hill to the Keck's".
Following my talk I will show a DVD that I have made from the stills of my trip to Hawaii to observe on the pre-eminent telescopes of our time, the twin 10m Keck telescopes atop the summit of Mauna Kea at 14,000ft on The Big Island. I have a really nice sound track behind it and each image pans and zooms.
This includes images from the summit and inside the observatories with up close and personal images of the telescopes and control rooms. The operators even tilted Keck II over far enough for me to image my reflection in the largest primary mirror on Earth. There are also images from the remote control rooms at 3,000ft at Waimea Keck HQ from our actual observing sessions.
For more info see the attached link.

Hope to catch up with any local IIS members from around the region.

Trevor

Ahhh, what a pity - I have to be in Bendigo some time next week for work, but have to be home for the following weekend (birthday commitments - not mine!). Would have loved to have gone along to hear your presentation - good luck with it Trevor!

Sorry you couldn't make it Jen, it was great to meet Eric and the guys from the Bendigo astro group.
I am definitely no astrophysicist but I am very passionate about astronomy and really enjoy trying to enthuse others. When I am on a roll it is difficult to stop me. I really did have a great time but was quite taken aback when the kids wanted my autograph after my presentation.
I thought the synchronous rotation of the Moon demo went over well and I think a few of the adults went home with a better understanding of what amateurs can achieve in astronomy.

Don't know Kev, you would have loved it. I did post this thread as a reminder on Aug 5th.
All of the exhibits in the Discovery Centre were great and most entertaining. It was excellent to meet Eric and there were others there from the Bendigo Astro group. It was a top night and we must have both been on the road coming home today.
There was some talk among the Bendigo group about planning a future visit to Broken Hill to observe with us.
Cheers Trevor

I didn't get to tour the Centre, but I saw the most fascinating thing in the gents' loo. The cisterns were made of clear plastic so the flushing mechanism could be observed. How about that! :)
