erick

Fund-raising for the local CFA brigade. Roast, veg and salad and lots of desserts - usually all you can eat then, and early am snacks for the next two nights!

Stephen.
The tent is more adventuress because of all the snakes in Snake valley :P
The roast is just a culinary delight for the taste buds

20-08-2009, 08:27 AM
Jen,

I'll be there with my 12 yo son for 3 nights - Fri ~ Sun.

He spends a bit of time in the evening observing with me and then goes to bed. By day to watches a bit of TV (in the caravan), plays DS, kicks the footy, etc. He wasn't bored at all at the March camp and is looking forward to going.

I can vouch for the value of this camp. I learn't heaps and it's great to see what the experts are doing and then go and try it yourself. As Doug (Hagar) said, it is really laid back. It's also a lot of fun seeing the friendly banter between the "imagers" of their hits and misses ....

The guys are really open to questions and have plenty of advise to dish out if you need it. It's also great being able to check out their equipment that's there including experimenting a bit with eyepieces, filters, etc, in your scope.

Hope to see you there

byronpaul
28-08-2009, 07:11 PM
Jen,

campsite is pretty basic - it's more just an open field. There is power to this area but that's mostly used for the scopes.

You don't really need to bring any kitchen or cooking stuff as you can use the facilities there. There is a big kitchen with fridges, stoves, pots, pans, cutlery, kettles, plates, etc.

You would need to bring your own food and drink, but most people opt for the Feast on the Saturday night.

Bring as much alcohol as you can pack :drink: ..... helps keep you warm when your out observing :astron: ....

Yes, you'll need heaps of warm clothes and sleeping stuff ... it does get cold at night. :cold: But the days are usual good.:sunny:

Toilets and shower facilities are also provided ... they even have hot water :D

There are also plenty of people on hand to help erect tents, etc, so that won't be a problem.

As mill said, bring your scope!!!!

Starkler
29-08-2009, 03:57 AM
Jen it can get down to 0 overnight so make sure you bring plenty of warm clothes and bedding. Two blankets were not enough for me so I ended up sleeping in my freezer suit :ashamed:

Ok lots of alcohol, lots of food and lots and lots of warm clothes and blankys and scope oops neally forgot that :rofl:ok got that on my list.
Thanks guys  im getting really excited i fell like a little kid hanging out to go the candy store

Martin, is there somewhere to cook a breakfast in the morning? Otherwise I'll just bring my camping stove.

erick
09-09-2009, 10:10 AM
Full kitchen - gas cook top, oven, microwave ovens, toasters, fridges, jugs plus moths and flies to taste.

erick
09-09-2009, 10:12 AM
We'll be on our bestest behaviour - except no promises about the fight for dessert at the Feast :D

If you get in by early afternoon, that might be a good time to chat and get advice, before it gets dark.

My apologies for Sat afternoon - I have had a commitment arise back in Melbourne - I'll have to go to town and get back after dark - see if there are any Feast scraps left

stephenb
09-09-2009, 10:34 AM

stephenb
09-09-2009, 05:37 PM
Whenever I go camping, I normally bring my own stove, or have a campfire, but I suspect the campfire is not an option at SV

I love cookups and regularly to a big country brekky, both at home and at work (because we are all shift workers, our workplace has a kitchen).

Better bring a second esky. :campfire:

learn to drink pink Nesquick? I can teach you if you wish.

[COLOR=darkorchid][B]

It's my favourite colour of Nesquik aswell. Also pink Cruisers are really super awesome on cloudy nights, even if the cute Dan Murphys checkout chick thinks I'm a fruitcake for buying it.

Jen

:lol: i love the banana nesquik too ;)

pgc hunter

yes but the pink one is uber superior. If you want to be awesome like me, you must drink pink Nesquick and also pink Cruisers, particularly if you want to look hard infront of your mates.

There is no shame in drinking pink beverages.

You are evil Paddy! :D I should have said - 12" aperture and less - I cannot afford to be tempted by bigger! I'm informed by greater powers that this is my last telescope! ;)

Hi Eric, I'll have my LB16 there... You're welcome to spend as much time as you like on it :-)
Gave the primary a quick clean this afternoon, but not really happy with the result - seemed like a lot of stuff not coming off and a few spots where the coating has oxidized. Be keen to get advice during the weekend from anyone...

I know the feeling, Eric. This is (theoretically) my last scope too. But you might be surprised at how well a 12" stacks up against a 16". There is a difference, but when I was deciding about upgrading, I compared my 12" side by side with 16" and 18" scopes I wasn't blown away by the bigger scopes.

In hindsight I think I would have preferred to go for a 12". Much easier to move around, and the views don't seem to be THAT MUCH better with the 16".

Well I finally got there at 8.30pm (work) I managed to meet most of the folks and watched Doug do a PS job on NGC253 (awesome).
The clouds were high but intermittently thick, and at about 12.00 it was excellent seeing (albeit dewy).
There was a lot of imaging going on in the lower field and I watched and chatted till about 1.30 when frost bite took over LOL.
I suspect there will be some fine images from Doug, Martin and co.

Got back from Snake Valley this AM. Great 2 days, weather was not perfect but a couple of crystal clear hours after about 11-30 on Sat night made it all worthwhile. Thanks Ken and everyone else involved for the hospitality, the music, the food at the feast and the conversations. Good to see Jan having a great time seeing new objects, I thinks its time you got yourself a dob Jen, someone sell her one!
Very pleased that my 12" proved as useful as the couple of 16"ers there on the brighter targets, very happy as it was the first time the beast has been under an even vaguely dark sky.
I have attached some photos of the camp ground, some shots I took of a family of swans on the lake with 4 or 5 cygnets and a pic of the slightly crooked security light that was vandal proof until XXXXX got involved!!!

See you all next time. Hope the weather is OK for the next 2 nights.

Ah, yes, it was good. Arrived Saturday and left Sunday. It was great to catch up with some people I knew and great to meet some for the first time. And 3 hours or so of good observing. Thanks Ken, Martin, Eric and all the Snake Valley crew for a great time. And I have to say as a strictly visual type of astronomy chap, Doug's demo of processing in Photoshop was amazing! What some of you imaging types know and can do is astonishing.

20-10-2009, 06:28 PM
Just finished my Nana-nap after getting my imaging set-up working last night in some of the best dark skies I've seen. I say that I got it working, but the assistance provided and advice and help offered from Doug, John, Peter, Martin and Daniel had to be seen to be believed.

And always, ken, albeit slightly under the weather, was the consummate host, with stories, live entertainment and a friendly welcoming environment.

I haven't even attempted processing the data I captured last night, but have a wealth of new things to try, It was my image of 253 that Doug tackled to the ooohs and ahhhhs of the watching crowd! To be honest my jaw dropped when I saw his final product with my data, I simply had no idea that the data was even there, oh that learning curve gets steeper and steeper.

All in all, given a couple of average weather days, I've had more fun and laughs in the last few days, and learnt more, than in the last year, Thanks all, yes, including you Jen!

Bring on March!

A summation of about half of the timelapse images into one image (using Startrails.exe)

Star trails (join the dots! :D ) plus obligatory aircraft plus wandering amateur astronomers.

No cleanup of the combined image afterwards - sorry.

IMAGE REMOVED - see the whole night in a later post.

My summation of the Camp.......
Well I guess a great time was had by all. The weather gods didn't look to favourably on us for the first couple of days but Monday night was something else. The skies have to be seen to be believed. Even with sky glow from Melbourne and Ballarat Mag 7 stars were easy to see. Very easy.
A great bunch of people and a very relaxed atmosphere make this camp one which shouldn't be missed. Great to see you all again.

And JEN, she deserves a paragraph on her own. A bubbly personality and really just like she appears in here. Nothing stops her from having a good time. She teamed up with Tanglefoot (Leon) now that's another story, to visit every telescope on the field, gave Erics Newtonian an errection looking at the pelicans on the lake (where is the photo Eric?) and managed to survive her 4 days with a bunch of blokes without anyone tormenting her too much, even though at times she deserved some torment.

The facilities at this camp are really second to none when you look at a lot of the other camps and provide space to work and play even when the weather is not so great. Definitely a must go camp for me.
Martin, Ken and the guys from Snake Valley AS deserve a real pat on the back for the organisation of the camp. Well done Guys.

I came home to a house full of termites and found they have taken a liking to my Oregon roof bearers so the Flick man is on his way and hopefully it wont be a million dollar exercise.

Book me in for March.

erick

May I express my appreciation to Ken and Martin for all they did to get the camp up and running and to make it a great time for all (I sincerely hope that it was). There sure was a lot of hard work, before, during and after the camp. I reckon they will be collapsed somewhere to recover.

Many others contributed to the success of the camp, but I fear missing a name, so I won't try to list them.

Funny thing is the first camp in 05 was no lights and even cabin lights where changed to red. But now with all this imaging:camera: lights everywhere and tents glowing like igloos on the ice :P

Sorry Jen Monday night was great :stargaze: and as you say size does matter:lol:

Hi Guys and Gals, ;) thanks to all for a top event, it dose get better each year, and yes I am now named tangle foot, buggered if I know why   well if tents didn't have ropes all would have been well.

Never mind, we all survived the weekend and it seemed that everyone have a good time.

The only drawback, was that I have to turn up for work this morning at 7am.

Leon

:)Nice one Eric ,can't wait to see how the video turns out :).
I dont' know how but it just keeps getting better every year!! Thanks to Ken and everyone who attended I had a top 4 days . Also a special mention has to go to Martin (mill) for helping me iron out some pc problems, also John G and Doug (Hagar) whom are always willing to help out and share their Knowledge.
I have been busy trying to sort out the odd 250 pics I took over the weekend so here are a few for now.
And yes Jen, sorry to say but the last night was stunning:P  Though we all did have lots of fun anyway.:)

Cheers Daniel.

I think I know why. Video shows one "desler" still going strong at dawn after everyone else had crashed (even me - I just left the camera clicking away)

Nice captures, Daniel. Glad I pointed out the crescent Moon to you. Everyone who knows the camp site, check the water level in the lake. Highest I have ever seen.

just adding my voice to the chorus of thanks to the folk from SVAA. Even though the weather wasn't fantastic on Friday and Saturday nights, we managed some time out under the stars, and as usual I came away with a few items added to my to do list...

First cab off the rank was to add a board at the base of my scope, so that airflow was forced up and around the mirror, and further up the tube. Thanks for the ideas Paddy. I used a piece of coreflute to cover the base, leaving holes for collimation knobs, feet, fans, etc. Once installed, I turned on the fan and noted an immediate difference - the cover over the top of the secondary cage inflated, and the shroud was pushed away from the trusses! :eyepop: This should help with preventing the mirrors dewing up.

Next project is dew heaters - Malcolm has given me a few ideas here, so now I'm tossing up whether to buy or build.

Already looking forward to March!

Peter

Things have changed since the first SV camp back in 2005 when the field was full of silver tubed dobsonians and a few lx200's. Nowadays its mainly refractors on eq mounts with the number of cables hooked up to them accounting for the skyrocketing copper prices over the last few years.

In a field full of telescopes there were only a small handful actually equipped to take an eyepiece:confused2: They missed some lovely views of Jupiter at dusk.

So here is my nod to astrophotography.
Canon A720IS snappy, single exposure 15sec , iso800, F-something?
Processed in Irfanview (contrast/brightness sliders)
