telrad on newt on gem

Before i jump the gun and make a goose of myself can someone offer some advice.

I am about to add a telrad to my meade 8" schmidt-newtonian reflector which is mounted on a German Eq Mount and i tend to favour fitting it to the back (primary mirror) end as it may free me from some contortions.

Does that sound like a reasonable choice of area or do you suggest a better mounting spot??

I've got a telrad fitted to the front end of my 10" newt on a GEM and it works a treat. You can sight from the back end of the tube if necessary - ie you don't need your eye to be near the telrad for it to work.

Arthur, I have always had the Telrad close to the eyepiece, so I can go back and forth between the two.


Why not peel back a small portion of the backing adhesive on the mounting bracket and temporarily stick it to your tube and test some different positions. Peel back, say, 1cm from the end of each strip of double-sided tape.

i have placed it on the front end of the scope but on the opposite side to the focuser: believe it or not there is no room between the focuser and the base for the finderscope to fix telrad base,

i Wish there was a dovetail base for the telrad then it could be fitted there and removed very easily. i know there is a riser base available but it doesn't look the same
