View Full Version here: : Taken a picture of your focusing mask?

No, it isn't what you think. Or, maybe it is

I'm fairly certain we've all done it. Some of us probably do it more than others. I just did close to an hour of subs on NGC 253, only to look at the subs on the camera and think that I had drift. I then looked over at my scope and noticed the focusing mask in place.

I figured I'd go ahead and process it anyway, as a memento to the occasion.

So I present to you, NGC 253 a la Bahtinov.

10x 5 minute exposures, FLT98 :P

So, who else is guilty and willing to post the evidence?

Hi citivolus:
Doubtlessly it is a very original photo. The star striae shine it much; also focus is excellent. :D
Many greetings

Guilty as charged, although I picked up my mistake on the 1st sub frame. I once took a 20 minute, hand guided shot (on 35mm film) of Eta Carina with my old Hartman Mask on….

Cheers

Once? LOL! For me - every time! That's me - focus and then set a sequence of 10 short subs - go!

D'oh!

Nice focus on the focus. I have taken some lovely 20 min exposures of a focus mask but they all were deleted.

Have also done this once, but realised what had happened when viewing first 10 min sub.

Too funny Ric !
At least you have a unique NGC 253 to show off.

I've done a similar thing a few years ago but mine was using the ED80 on the moon.

It was extremely difficult to get the full moon in the fov, let alone focus, until I realised I had left the solar filter on from earlier in the day while doing some solar imaging.

How about leaving a lens cap on....done that a couple of times when visually observing. Wondered why the sky was so black!!!.

Well, I can say this about your piccie...they're the most tightly focused stars I've ever seen!!:P:D:D

Actually, you could be on to the start of a fad here Ric. You should shoot a bright cluster like the Pleiades, post a pic, then wait for someone to ask how you get such groovy diffraction spikes...... :D

Hmm? that's just lots of Ant Nebulae (aka Menzel 3) sent to munch on NGC253 http://members.pcug.org.au/~stevec/ant_full.jpg
