probably i will only give up my scope if someone was to give me a 130TOA or a 150TOA. Visually very contrasty, planets very nice, deep sky very nice also. Focus is good and you can get away with the standard focuser for visual, the case and extras are great, finderscope is good with the illuminated reticle. have a search on this site for the ED127.

I added the moonlight focuser to mine well worth it.

agree with Houghy, I am very happy with the scope. I too changed the focuser, but I replaced it with one made by the same company, have a search there are a few threads on this scope here on this forum

Like David, I added a Moonlight focuser to my scope. I found that with a large chip ie QHY8 or Canon 20D there was no need for field flatteners as it has a remarkably flat field. Also no (in my scope) CA in photos or visual. You may get a little coulour around bright stars optically and visually on a night of bad seeing due to atmospheric aberations. I find that using a Bahtinov mask for focusing, nails that aspect so tightly, that once I have clamped the focus on the Moonlight focuser its perfect.
If you buy this scope - get a Moonlight focuser. Not only will it enhance the scope to a top end instrument but the people there are great with their service.
Can't recommend my scope too highly, but Im basing my bias on this scope only - there may be variation in other samples. I raise this caveat as my scope has hand selected japanese optics/glass from the factory through the distributor.

The scope sounds wonderful, and I do plan to place an order. Not yet absolutely certain from whom I'll order it, though.

Is the standard focuser just no good, i.e., defective in design or manufacture, or is it just inadequate for imaging?

Thanks for all the great advice, my Australian friends! I placed my order today. I decided to go with Explore Scientific, since I can call them up on the telephone if the need arises, and they are relatively close by for warranty purposes.

Now I have to decide which mount and eyepieces I can afford to buy. :scared:

will go nicely on a heqpro5 or even better an eq6 - if you have more money then you could go other higher quality mounts like G8 or g11 losmandy or a vixen mount.... you can even get away with a second hand meade Lx75 or celestron mount, though i would recommend getting one of the others. maybe see what you can try out if someone will let you

I have just replaced my HEQ5-Pro with an EQ6. The HEQ5 would take the 5" easily but as David said the EQ6 is better and in the end more versatile. I would recommend the EQ6 as best value for money

Which of the Orion mounts, if any, correspond to the mounts you mentioned? I'm not familiar with the mount names that you mentioned. :help:

as for ep's get explore scientific to give you a good deal on their range of ep's - esp the 100deg 14mm ep

I am also very happy with my ED127 and am also going to purchase a moonlight focuser when I get back from holidays in the US.
