With the recent passing of Robert S. McNamara, SBS One will be airing
Erroll Morris's brilliant Oscar winning documentary, "The Fog of War".
McNamara, ex president of the Ford Motor Company was later Secretary of
Defence under Kennedy and for a while under Johnson.
In a series of interviews combined with archival footage and a moving score by
Philip Glass, Morris provides a series of "lessons" by McNamara who in his
later years has the benefit of wisdom that comes with age along with the
benefit of twenty-twenty hindsight.
From the Great War, to the fire bombing of Tokyo in World War II, to the
Cuban Missile Crises, to the Gulf of Tonkin incident and the tragedy of the
Vietnam War, McNamara provides riveting accounts of them all.
One of my favorite pieces of documentary film making, "The Fog of War"
is compulsory viewing for anyone interested in the history of the 20th Century
and for that matter, anyone interested in hard won lessons to carry forward into
the future.
