Hi all.

Well...I've finally succumbed to the temptation and am getting myself a 3G 16GB Apple iPhone.

For those who already have one, or use Apple computer hardware/software, I'm curious to see what your favourite free (astro or non-astro) apps are?

Onya Matt. It's the single best bit of personal electronic gear I've ever owned. The knockers don't know how good they are, and would probably offer an opinion on them before they'd used one for a while. Simply brilliant. I've only ever bought apps from the iTunes AppStore. There are thousands, and it's all very well integrated. Updates are automatic too.

I have NOT succumbed to jailbreaking the phone - because I don't think that the average user would ever need to. If you're a geek who really just HAS to go around the gate house because you can and bypass the guard - then fine. Apple-sanctioned is the way to go - everything is supported then.

Hehe had one from the first launch here, it is the greatest single device I have and for me it eliminates the need for a laptop. Most users - self included - go through a phase where they collect a lot of apps, try them out then trash most of them when the novelty wears off. Favorite apps:

Mating Call ;) probably the most important of all...

OzWeather - excellent weather app, it uses the latest BOM data and accesses the data from the AWS stations in each state. Far more accurate than any other for local forecast data and it has been pretty good at predicting weather 1 week out.

Emerald Chronometer 'Mauna Kea' - the most sophisticated "watch", it syncs with GPS time, shows sunrise/set, moonrise/set, moon phase, twilight, siderial time, the zodiac constellations in real time, GMT and more, all on one dial. Then there are the other watches that come with it, but I don't find them useful.

i41CX - full emulation of the HP41CX calculator, and then some, it means I can quickly program the iPhone to do something simple.

StarMap Pro. The best iPhone ephemeris by a wide margin, it is specifically designed to use in the dark at the scope and clearly was designed by an experienced observer.

TouchFS - for storing and viewing files on the iPhone, mainly PDF's. I have PDF star charts and other reference materials on it as well as other work-related stuff.

Clinometer - use it for leveling the tripod, checking the altitude of the polar axis and more.

Domain - for looking for a place to live, works very well compared to hunting online.

Remote - for driving my AppleTV or iMac from the lounge

And a bunch of games but I'll refrain from boring you there.

I don't have an iPhone but I do have an iPod Touch 8Gb. I haven't had for very long and it is a replacement for a dying (now dead) PDA, so I don't have too many apps yet.

Todo - is a task manager that I am finding very usefull.

WifiTrak - helps find open Wi-Fi hotspots.

They are the only ones I have at the moment as I don't have Wi-Fi at home, and you need to have Wi-Fi to download apps.

One thing I have noticed since upgrading from OS 2.2.1 to OS 3.0 is that the first day of the week has changed from Sunday to Monday in the Calendar.:( Does anyone know how to change it back?

Just got the Iphone 8gig, like it, just updated to the new firmware. Any advice on how I can set a music track I just downloaded from I tunes store as my ring tone? I have done exactly as noted in the help files and still can't get it to work.
