Hi all

After breaking the news (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/index.php?id=70,550,0,0,1,0) of Anthony Wesley’s discovery (http://jupiter.samba.org) of an impact scar on Jupiter on Monday morning (while I was waiting to board a plane to Melbourne), Friday night was my first opportunity to capture an image of the now famous "Wesley Impact Scar", or "Bird Strike" (Anthony’s forum name (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=47481) is "bird").

I’d been in Melbourne all week and was very frustrated to have not been able to capture an image of it until now. On Friday night, 24th July, the impact scar was transitting while Jupiter was almost right overhead, but unfortunately the seeing conditions were only average, and deteriorated even further as the Bird Strike came more into view.

Hopefully I'll get another opportunity this week, with any luck, in better seeing.

Thanks for looking.

Very nice captures of this great event Mike. The blackness of the scare of the impact really stands out from anything else.

All the best for more.

Well done Mike,
Must have been extremely frustrating being in Melbourne with this unfolding.

Cheers

Great images as usual, Mike.

I haven't been able to keep up with all the threads, but what exactly caused the impact? Do we know, or is it just speculation?

Yeh I don't think they know for sure yet.
