I too, grew up with Hey Hey, like many others and was l fortunate enough to end up working at GTV-9 with Hey Hey (amongst many other programs out of Melbourne) many years later. A wonderful institution. I have no doubt the "reunion" specials later in the year will be a hit and will be very well produced.

Saturday nights have never been the same for families who just want to sit down together and enjoy light entertainment.

Jeepers, I wouldn't be admitting that publicly :P

A dafter program I never saw - though I fully understand the flak I'll cop for saying that ;)

That was one of the best programs ever made, good variety, something for everyone. Looking forward to see it again.

cheers

Hey Hey it's a Rehash.

As much as I loved watching it with my family when I grew up, I can't say I'm interested in watching this. Quite simply I've moved on.

Sure I got plenty of laughs out of it over the years, but to be perfectly honest, I'd find seeing the old gang again cringeworthy. Red, Dickie *cringe*. There's nothing like 80's humour...

Pass.

I thought the best part of the show was the bands playing, whether live or not and the comedians.

Loved a guy called, "The Amazing Jonathon" who was a regular visitor when he came out from the states.

Will be good for a reunion but I cant see it making a sustained comeback

Their biggest mistake was axing it.
We used to watch it every week and I don't think I know anyone who did'nt watch it.
A great family fun show.

Cheers Daniel.

Fair comment paul :) but I still used to watch it and often wonder why I did, enter reality tv ,I can't watch ( most recent offering)
A gaggle of people trying to convince me they can cook a few simple dishes without killing the judges, though that weird looking guy with the scarfs and odd comments was a riot to flip past :)

bring back hey ,hey and I'll likely watch it ,sad but true :) :)

I hope this won't stop you all from setting up earlier on a wintery Saturday night. Latecomers to observation nights will be noted.

I used to watch it on occasion when it was on in the mornings - and that was years ago. LOL!

I notice with interest that most are replying to this thread in reference to themselves. I'd hope that everyone has grown up a bit since it was on - and in that light would probably not really enjoy this particular flavour of zanyness any more.

But... having said that, I can't think of a better show for kids. What other kids shows are there on a Saturday that would most certainly entertain them, and if the parents had to watch as well to keep an eye on the kids, it wouldn't be unbearable for them either.

It was an institution for decades, and there were definite reasons for that. Daryl Somers is brilliant at this style of entertainment.

I can't believe no-one's mentioned John Blackman's incredibly hilarious off-the-kilter commentary.

That was what made the show for me. As well as Red's comments and critique on Red Faces.

Lavinia Nixon, anyone? :P

Humayun

Yeah so did I. If I remember rightly they also used to show cartoons then?

Fair point Chris, but what are we watching 10 years later in the year 2009? Wall to wall grizzly crime/murder/police/CSI/legal shows or reality/survivor/elimination shows with a groups of degenerate Generation Y'ers locked in a house, or marooned on an island, or dancing/singing/idol type shows, or a bunch of overweight contestants trying to lose weight, or two women cooking a chicken... etc... etc..

Hey Hey may not have been for everyone, but all I ask for is some light entertainment I can sit down with my family as a family, and enjoy without being bombarded by all of the above. And that's what a show like Hey Hey was able to provide.

Maybe the reaction and interest is coming from like-minded people of a similar age? Generation X'ers and older who are just after some good old fashioned family entertainment.

Ozzie: My dog hasn't got a nose.
Daryl: How does he smell?
Ozzie: Terrible!

Don't get me wrong Stephen! As a family show there ain't better IMHO! What I was commenting on were the earlier commenters whom stated that they were older now and no longer into it. I'd rather see this sort of programming back than the TV kids watch these days.

I'll certainly be watching - for nostalgia's sake if nothing else!

I'll watch it as long as Darryl doesn't host it,

he was good in his Hey Hey day but I think it's all gone to his head

small man syndrome

PS: not all small men are the same for those vertically challenged, like me out there

Sorry, Chris, I misinterpreted you comments.

In fact I rarely watch commercial TV in the last 10 years or so. I think TV in the country has gone down hill. I am not attributing that to the ending of Hey Hey, per se. But I do think that Australian TV was taking a dramatic turn around 1998-99, when all the "lifestyle" shows were hitting their peak and the Survivor/Race Around The World/ Big Brother reality formats were becoming common place. In the last 10 years I have almost given up on TV altogether, except for Time Team!

Perhaps the reaction to Hey Hey is a wider, more symbolic message from the Australian TV audience? That we are sick of the rubbish and demand better?

I first watched it for memory when Daryl was a side kick and the host was a bloke named Peter McKenna.
Peter was the full forward for my favourite VFL/AFL team, Collingwood and as a kid he was my idol.

I don't remember when Peter got the chop but he was basically replaced by a pink ostrich puppet not long after he started and the rest is history.

Great memories

Awmegawd... they've brought it back for a whole series. I just saw that ad on Ch9.

I guess that it must have rated rather well, so will it last for the full 20 episodes or will it fade away again...

Only time will tell :)

At least some form of variety show is back for a while, which can only be a good thing.
