View Full Version here: : Eagle, Swan and Triffid through the 8 inch Newt
A few "quick and dirty" pics from earlier this month, just before full moon. These are my first ever shots of the Eagle and Swan nebulae. Very impressive objects, and quite exciting for me seeing them appear on the screen for the first time, so I'll definitely be returning for longer efforts.
I was very pleased with how these relatively short exposures came out in the end considering the moonlight and lights of surburbia, although obviously no competition for some of the beautiful long exposure shots others have posted here. I just love my Hutech light pollution filter...
Eagle 4 x 3mins
Omega/Swan 6 x 3 mins
Triffid 6 x 3 mins
All by 450D@ISO 400 + MPCC on 8" Newt, calibrated, autoguided.

For such short subs these are mighty impressive.
I will have to look into the Hutech filter.

Three very nice images for such a short exposure period Rob. I have to agree with you that longer exposures or at least a lot more of them will improve your overall result.
Well done Rob.

Splendid work Rob.
You won't need the filter this weekend though!:D
Thanks Frank - Davewaldo and I bought one each from Peter Tan (Hong Kong). Bit over $200 at the time, but worth it to be able to image from the city.
Thanks David - I was pleased too
Thanks for the kind words Doug. Might just get a chance this Sat when Pyrmid (Peter) "opens" his new observatory west of Bris.
Nope - looking forward to Peter's. Not that you ever need a filter with your sky! Glad to hear "Macy" has had first light - you must be having fun this week.

My 2" IDAS showed up on Monday, but I'm too lazy to unpack the trailer and try it out :confuse3:
Triffid seems blue, is this the filter?

Really good images Rob considering the conditions your imaging in.
The Trifid is the pick of the bunch

Nice Rob :)
Whilst I agree with David and think that you've had your best result with M20, M16 is great too - one I've not yet had a crack at. Great work!

Three very nice and tidy pictures. Focus and tracking are flawless. More data would make them even nicer. Top work.

some nice work there, more exposure subs will bring out the fine detail even better.

Nice work Rob. For such little exposures they have all come out very nicely. I quite like how the Swan has come out.
The Hutech LPS filters are one of the best pieces of equipment you can purchase for imaging. Wouldn't image without one now.
Well done.
The LPS does accentuate the blue and green Robin - blue particularly. Its pretty easy to tame though when you're setting the black pt - just have to keep an eye on pulling them in after stretching. I seem to recall Eric Lo saying same time ago the Hutech is much easier to tame colour-wise than many harsher UHC filters
Many thanks David - I was surprised and happy too. Love the work you've both been putting out lately.
Thanks Chris. I haven't been able to visualise anything in M16 from the city, so pleased at what I got near full moon. Hope the weather obliges you when the time comes!
Many thanks Marc and Clive. I suspect I'll have to figure out some way of marking where the camera sits for additional exposures, or I'll end up with 2 sets of "Newt spikes". Will probably start over from scratch if decent opportunity presents.
Thanks Les!
Thanks Matty - I'm still in awe of that M16 you posted the other day!

Rob, Great set of pics!
M17 is the pick of the bunch for me, focus looks amazing, good detail and nebulosity extension.. perfect tracking... Ticks all the boxes! :)
Well done!
Thanks Alex! Its a smorgasboard this time of year isn't it - let's get to it and do some major pillaging of photons at Peter's tomorrow night...

Yer welcome to M20 Alex.
My list includes The Helix, NGC 253, M27 and if I go the distance M31 and M33.
Even if I only get 1/2 hours worth on each I'll be more than happy.
Only 20hrs to go....
(looking forward to see those Starshoot Pro M8 shots too Alex....)

JJJ... I too am very keen to try and hold out for M31 or M33.. If I could get 3~5 5 min subs of either I'd be happy for the time being!
Helix MAY be my interim target between when M20 hits the meridian and when M33 breaks 25°... 253 might help fill that void too I suppose... Or maybe the Veil complex... Ahhh the choices that need to be made!! I'm so disorganised!
Rob.. Processing is underway.. got darks/flats/bias frames all in tow.. Hopefully I got the focus right! :D hahaha

There's so much to image and so little time to do it in.
