OK People,
to try the old scope I got the 10" f5 newt onto the G-11 last night and shot 10 images of M42. Total exposure time I haven't yet calculated (and will) but guess at about 20minutes, ranging between 1 minute and 4 minutes, at ISO1000, Nikon D100.
Compare this to the earlier image I posted, it is significant.
Worst thing is the 10" cost about 25% of what the 7" cost. Go figure.

You had to do it didn't you.:P Went past the amount of exposure time that I had.

Great image Gary, Really good detail in the outer limits. Bet your chuffed.

Now with cloud sitting over me, I can't do any imaging.

Wow Gary that's truly magnificent, the outer edges look awesome.. There really is a huge difference compared to your previous shot.

You need to work on masking out the core or something to prevent washing out the middle.. that's still Paul's pursuit I think, isn't it Paul? :)

That's a first rate pic Gary, any more detail and we'll be seeing proto-planetary disks :)

Have you thought about imaging the trapezium and Photoshoping it into the overexposed centre? There was an S&T article last year explaining how to do it.

Hi Guys,
thanks.
AS I promised, that's the last M42, well from me anyway. It is a satisfying end, but as has been pointed out, it is one of the more difficult as well. The contrast difference that exists makes seeing detail in the Trap and outer regions virtually impossible. I may work on that, and with the ideas that have been posted in mind.
We have already tried the cut and paste routine, but will give it a further whirl.

I like it a lot!

I have yet to shoot M42 in colour this/last year. I haven't got around to it yet.
