View Full Version here: : JJJ's Hottest 100 of all time.
Anyone else following the countdown of TripleJ's Hottest 100 songs of all time?
http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/hottest100_alltime/countdown/cd_31-40.htm
To celebrate 20 years of JJJ's hottest 100, and after a long voting period, JJJ has been counting down from 100 to 1 for the last week, 20 songs a day, 10songs from 10am to 11am, and a further 10 from 4pm to 5.
Up to(down to?) song 31 now, songs 30 to 21 this afternoon, then they will start again on saturday with songs 100 to 51, then on sunday songs 50 to 1.
Some surprises in there(Mr Brightside by The Killers.... WTF?!?!), and some you would expect (Beatles, Floyd, Johnny Cash etc etc).
Surprised to see Blue Monday by New Order so high up(32), loved this song 20 years ago, but I thought it had been forgotten! For a track that NEVER gets any airtime on ANY station, impressive.
SO.... what are your predictions for #1 song of all time?
I reckon The Easybeats, Friday on my mind.
Or maybe Pink Floyd - The Wall.
Or maybe David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes
meh.... I haven't got a clue!

If it was this JJJ's top 100;), Number One would be a Pink Floyd classic. Maybe "Wish You Were Here" or "Echoes".

When JJJ first started this, no. 3 was usually the latest "hit" for that year, no. was Throw Your Arms Around Me (Hun'ers) and no. 1 was Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division).
At least the last will 2 should show up in the top 10 - or am I outdated?

Yeah, I always remember no 1 as being Joy Division for many years, until jjj became the 'National Yoof Network' and went much more mainstream. jjj was much better as a Sydney station. Bring back Biggsy, and Maynard! "Fist me dead!"
Cheers,
Jason.
Yeah was definitelly better when JJJ was 'alternative' rather than 'youth'.... but it still beats all the other stations by a long margin... no ads, no Beyonce/Timberlake/Spice girls or whatever other crap song you already heard 5 mins ago.
I don't remember any song being #1 more than a year in a row?
Didn't think it possible as untill now, the Hottest 100 had always been limited to songs released in the previous 12 months.
Please no, Maynard, realy?

In honour of the JJJ Hottest 100 is this list

some of the choices are pretty close to the mark.

Ah, only since the 'Yoof' incarnation, before that, every year the hottest 100 was 'all time', not 'new crap'.
Cheers,
Jason.
OK, so I'm old and grumpy!
Heh, so it was. Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_J_Hottest_100,_1989)
I must be getting old too, don't remember those first three being open!

I read quite a few big names picked this one ahead of B/R
some years back.. a few of them getting the nod in this poll as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go
All the ameriacan recordings imo are all a fair swansong of an old man
nearlly done with life but still a fair reminder of a real persistant talent :)
seriously if thirsty merc and nickle back don't get a mention in this poll
in the top 10 .. or pink for that matter .. THENe ITtS ALle RIGED:mad2:

I managed to get about half way through the Punch worst 100:doh: and with not knowing 75% of the songs named and the the commentary mostly dribble, I gave up:sadeyes:
Now that brings back memories.....bring back Mel and Vic !!!

This is renowned as The Impossible Question of All Time.
I was in a loud rock'n'roll band in the 60's and 70's and really don't like ANYTHING recorded after 1980 ;) but this question has always fascinated me, so here are a few of my top 100 candidates, between which I cannot choose:
Best all-time ever rock song Having Everything - "Good Vibrations"
Best genius arrangement of a rock song (arrangements are hugely important, lots of people don't realize this) - "Good Vibrations"
Best enduring classic rock song with a great arrangement - "Route 66" by the Stones (did you know the composer of this song, Bobby Troup, was also a TV actor in "Emergency" in the '70s)
Best unadorned (most were electronically altered) rock guitar solo - "Hippy Hippy Shake" by the Swinging Blue Jeans (simple, but listen to it a few times)
Best solo genius rock song - "Suite - Judy Blue Eyes" by CS&N (Stephen Stills was called "Captain Manyhands". He allegedly has other people on this song, no less than David Crosby and Graham Nash, but listen carefully, it is nearly all Stills. He plays guitar, bass, sings vocal in Spanish, and multitracks harmony with himself. Judy was Judy Collins, his long-time love)
Best ever rock group - The Who (no not the Stones and all those others). They had the best ever drummer until he died, the best ever bassist until he died, and the best ever composer-arranger-guitarist still. Vocalist, ah well, can't win them all. Their best ever song? "Substitute".
All time immortal rock song guitar riff? This is hard, what with "Satisfaction", "Pretty Woman", "Substitute" etc, but - "Sunshine of Your Love"
Best ever genius instrumental rock tune - "Jessica" (what's that you say? Theme from Top Gear)
Cheers

Give me some Hendrix any day. What about Zepplin?

Hendrix - all along the watch tower came in at 29th in the hottest 100 of all time...
I'm personally really impressed with what I've heard so far, and im listening to JJJ as I write this...
Definitely going to be a great album when its available to buy!
My Top 10 in no real order
Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zepplin
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry
A Day in the Life - The Beatles
Light my Fire - The Doors
Hotel California - The Eagles
Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
My Generation - The Who
Eewww. Can't stand it! LOL
Yeah, shame not all labels allow their tracks to be used. Leaves a few gaps in the H100 albums :(
Heard today that RAGE will be doing the H100 over a couple of saturdays, got the HD recorder ready ;)
I was listening to the 100 down to 51 set today.
Good to see Pink Floyd "Comfortably Numb" made it in.
Definitely an interesting mix of new and old.
Cheers

I agree, Clarkson should be made to imitate a street light in the Scottish Highlands.
BTW I saw an early episode of Top Gear somewhere and it was MUCH better, before Clarkson became convinced he was a mechanical messiah.
You did mean the show didn't you :lol:

3 of my favourites that scored highly in the original polls
Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode
How Soon is Now - The Smiths
Uncertain Smile - The The
Also love Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty, truly haunting sax but not sure if it ever has been played on JJJ
I still have the original hottest 100 T-shirt, doesn't fit too well these days  with all the song names on the back of the shirt still legible

Well thats a fair bunch of songs .. I think the only artists i don't have in the top 20 definately on the shelf would be foo fighters .. great music but never felt the need to buy , and the hilltop hoods who again I think are great but the haunting "sampled " lyrics of mel saffini make that track.

There's the 100. Highest vote for me was Nick Cave at #36.
Quite surprised RATM got so high. Still great song. Hope they go all out and release the full list as the cd package despite having most songs as mp3 or owning the albums they came from.
LOL Geoff, nope, love the show, hate the music.
Peter, yeah Baker Street is a great track. I stayed on Baker street on my last visit to London ;)
Alex, yep awesome track. Huge fan of the original Tubular Bells.
My mum reckons I love it so much 'coz she listened to it everyday while pregnant with me!
Andrew, would be nice, but it depends on the various record labels and artists if the ABC can use them on an album.
Apparently Yono Oko has allowed JJJ to put a live version of Imagine on their album... first time anyone has been granted permission!
My highest vote came in #5, Radiohead's Paranoid Android (big Hitch-Hikers fan ;))
My #1 vote came in #46, Faith No More - Epic

Hello, hello, hello, hello,
Hello, hello, hello, hello,
Hello, hello, hello, hello,
Hello, hello, hello, hello.
Na na na na, na na na na...
Great lyrics. Now I know why it was No.1 on the list!
Recommend YouTube "Weird Al" Yankovic - Smells Like Nirvana, if you want a giggle! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnuHJZMdako
Especially love the lyrics;
"Now I'm mumblin' and I'm screamin'
And I don't know what I'm singin'
Crank the volume, ears are bleedin'
I still don't know what I'm singin'
We're so loud and incoherent
Boy, this oughta bug your parents
Yeah"
Pretty much sums it up, methinks!
"Sayonara, sayonara
Ayonawa, odinawa
Odinaya, yodinaya
Yaddayadda, yaaahyaaah
Ayaaaaaah!"
