Moon - wide fields & colour saturation. 5th July.

Hello,

Managed to set up last night but as the seeing was quite ordinary, perhaps 5 to 6/10, I decided to go prime focus and forget the PowerMates.

Here is a Canon 40D saturated shot and a couple of DMK31 shots. All taken using the Mewlon 180, with F9.6 Reducer/Corrector for Canon and F12 prime focus for DMK images.

The Nisqually boots came into their own as it was a cool night in Brissie!

LOL! I'll be the first to reciprocate Dennis, and say wow! Nice shots indeed. The Mewlon is a beautiful instrument, and it shows here. Very nicely captured and processed. Interesting colour difference between the Canon and my Nikon. Both are nice. :)

The boots are OK I take it? :lol:

Thanks Chris! I am inseparable from my boots; their level of comfort is astonishing. Another added bonus is that they don’t cut up the back lawn as they have soft soles. My mountaineering boots previously made a mess of my observing area due to their rigid soles!

The more I have worn the boots, the more gladder(!) I am that I erred on the next size up – so much more accommodating of thick socks and it helps to make it so easy when inserting and removing my feet, swaddled in the soft warmth on the felt inners.

Very nice images Dennis,
Love the crisp detail in all of them, I think the job with the colour saturation is one of the better efforts that has been posted here.

The fine detail in Aristarchus looks great and you have captured several of the craterlets on the floor of Plato.

I like the sound of the boots and know what you mean about the lawn getting chopped up. I have what could be mistaken for a crop circle around the spot where I set up my EQ6.

Thanks Trevor – as you probably know, those 4 or so 2-3km craterlets on Plato’s floor used to be one of the goals of lunar photographers and here we are, despite some poor seeing, revealing them with the lowly webcam! How times have changed.



Thanks Anthony – I thought I would stay in the precincts of our Earth’s neighbourhood as you seem to have the remainder of our solar system all wrapped up!



Thanks Peter – Remote Live View sure is helpful in getting a nice focus on lunar features. Pity my Bahtinov Mask doesn’t work on craters!



Thanks Mike – I had to download and install Registax 5 whereupon I stumbled upon your name in the credits for the development team – well done! Then, I had to get familiar with the new interface although it helped enormously that the basic functions and workflow hadn’t changed too dramatically.

Hmmm Plato. Very nice Dennis. That you captured the craterlets within is the cherry on top.

I've bought some new snow boots and snow pants as well. The boots are rated to -5 if you're just sitting or standing, the trousers are wind and water proof. It's like wearing a feather doona, soooo very warm and comfy.
Looking forward to some cold weather to test them out properly.

Chris – I omitted to address this point earlier.
I created a Saturation Layer in CS3 and pumped up the saturation to 95% (horrid colour noise!) and then blended it in as a Saturation Layer at 75%.



Thanks JJJ – yes, the craterlets were a surprising bonus, I was very pleased that they came out as I couldn’t see them whilst the avi was being recorded. Ahh, warm feet for you too!

I was recording frames at 1/150 sec exposure which can, to some extent, offset the effects of poor seeing when shooting at the relatively short focal lengths of prime focus. Webcams really come into their own under these conditions.
