G'Day All,
One of the local primary schools in my home town ask if I would bring my telescope down and set it up to show student the night sky .We had about 25 students and their parent's turn up .The night was clear an cold and we viewed M7 the moon and the Jewelery Box .The thing I love the most is when kids say "Wow that's cool" and ask what they are looking at and you try and point it out in the open sky with their normal eye sight then they look back in the telescope and say that's cool.
The night went well an all when home happy and ask if their could be another night and I am sure their will be

That's wonderful Ian!
It's fantastic to give the kids a special experience like that.
I still remember the awe and excitement I felt when I was a teenager (very long time ago:P:lol:) and a good soul did exactly that and brought his scope to our school one night.
We looked at Jupiter and I was blown away!:eyepop:
Well Done. :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Ian, I started doing the same thing earlier this year with high school students (Yr10). After several successful sessions with them I advertised here on IceInSpace and five others joined me for an event back in April. See post http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=41991
Most of us have kept in contact and have had a session or two together since. Well done on sharing the experience with others.

Congratulations Ian, It really is a worthwhile thing to do. Some of the questions that get thrown at you can be challenging at times, but if you have the knack for it you can really get the point across to the young 'uns.
I used to do it about 20 years ago at a couple of local schools and it is a real buzz. Also a friend of mine back then was doing a science presentation and she chose astronomy. She conducted a introductory presentation in the hall in the evening, then escorted the class out onto the oval where I was set up with the scope, and we did a live presentation for the second half. She received top marks!

I took part in a lot of school presentations when I was in Bunbury. Was great to show the kids (and the mums and dads) the night sky. We set up anything up to 6 scopes and the kids went from one to the other having the object pointed out visually and then through the scope. Loved the look of wonder on the faces.
Funniest comment I heard was from a mum when her little fella commented that Jupiter "has moons, mum". Mum replied that he should know that, he watched enough Star Trek :lol: and the kids that got me to say "ye canna change the laws o'physics, captain" in my scottish accent.
