taken the lead from Ken on this one. So for a bit of fun how many fellas on the site have beards of some description?

Does it help protect from the cold and insects?

Is it a barrier to the elements?

Is is a fashion statement?

Or like me it hides your ugly mug!!

All of the above, plus it keeps me cooler in the summer (shades my ugly mug)http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=3771

Good one Houghy!

Probably all of the above. But mostly coz I originally grew it to hide the scars from a dog attack! Now it's just a part of me. It changes too. Sometimes very long and scraggly "Ned Kelly' style, other times it's trimmed back to a little goatie!

It's at the goatie stage at the moment.

That dog attack: When I was 12yo a dog jumped up and attacked me, bit me in the face and tore off my top lip. I hate the scars so I hide them as best I can.

:ashamed: Guilty.

Ugly mug hiding is a big plus. But I am fundamentally (don't you hate "basically"?) lazy and a skin flint, so I couldn't be bothered spending the money on razors.:evil2:

Cheers:cheers:

I can't grow a beard, no matter how hard I try. Best I can manage is a goatee, but it doesn't join up with my side'ees.

Something in my jeans, i mean genes :D

Mine come and goes too, here one week gone the next, and sometimes changes shape. Could never get the rythm of consistant shaving.

I've taken the sides off since this photo but it's still the big goatee look. Great for protecting the face on the bike in sub-zero temps

Yes, ice in the beard is a sure sign it's too cold to ride. Done that too many times.

12-10-2005, 11:16 AM
I had one once. now I get up to a 3-4 day growth and it bugs me... I tend to shave twice a week.

If I buy a SCT do I have to grow a beard?

My wife is related to Ned Kelly but she doesn't have a beard. Thankfully.

Edit: She told me to write that she's beautiful, after that last comment. Things are back to normal now.:ashamed:

David

This has to take the cake on all the polls I have seen on this forum,

Really, "how many IISsers have beards"!

erick
15-12-2008, 11:57 AM
My fault, Petra, for dredging up an ancient thread - it came up in a search I had done (that had nothing to do with beards, strangely enough)

To be fair, David did qualify his first post:- "....how many fellas on the site have beards...."

Hi Erik

Yes, that area used to have community pool and club house (i think).

I used to work in Melbourne so travelled from that station quite a bit.

Back to beards........ sorry guys.

Cheers Petra

Does 7-8 day old stubble count ???

Used to have a very heavy beard when I was in year 11 and 12 , had to shave it off when I took up my cadetship to become a chemist with BHP Steel , being cleanshaven was a safety requirement (to enable good sealing of face masks for gas rescue equipment).
Same when I returned later as an engineer.

Never bothered growing it back , wife is not keen on men with beards ....

15-12-2008, 01:59 PM

Petra - Dave might like you with a beard ;)

LOL I did shave it off once - before I got married it was a classic situation - she had to pick me up at the railway station, I didn’t tell her I shaved it off and had a haircut in Sydney(I had it when she dropped me off to go to a training course in Sydney). She drove past 2 times – the third she got out and looked around for me – I yelled out and she ignored me to start with – then she just stared in shock after that. LOL

Only grew one once. Full set too. Then I had to go have an ID pic taken , one of those old sepia type ones.. Took one look and thought OMG !. All I needed was a turban and I would have got into any Sikh temple anywhere.
Mrs persuaded me to shave it off soon after. :)

Filthy things. I've seen (with a microscope) what lives inside the fungus and its not a pretty sight.

My partner is chinese :) and I'm only allowed near after a VERY close shave.
There's also an adage "Beware of men bearing beards, they're hiding something".

garyp
15-12-2008, 10:13 PM
No I've never grown one just a bit of stubble at times, when I get lazy with the razor. (actually lazy quite a lot.:D) helps save a bit of money.

Yeah. I've had one for about 35 years. Back then anyone who rode bikes just seemed to have one,
I also found that if I shaved more than a couple of times that I broke out into a rash so I gave razors the big flick.
I've always had a fair mop of hair on my skull too but about 20 years ago when I was working in a plastic extrusion factory I decided to shave my skull due to the heat but I kept my Ned Kelly beard. Made showering a breeze, didn't need a comb or brush and it felt great. Used to put Vaseline on my head to make it shine, no crap.
I was as happy as a pig in the proverbial but I began to notice that children in the street would look at me uneasy and back away. Looking in the mirror one night I began to realise why, (God, I was a mean looking ugly mother) so the hair came back. I also got sick of neo-nazi skinheads trying to treat me like a "brother.":mad2: Now I'm just an ugly mother.:)

Nothing like ancient threads revitalised.
I also have a beard. Easier than shaving every day. It was my wifes suggestion to grow it in the first place many years ago. I've shaved it off once but my daughter didn't recognise me so I regrew it.
I also work in "Beardy St" now so I'm afraid it will have to stay.
