What would be the top 3 things you would do?
For me:
1. Share a portion with family and friends
2. Put the money in an interest bearing account and retire on the interest
3. Buy a house on the beach
;)

I'd definitely give a portion to each immediate family member.
I'd like to buy another place out here in the country, on a bigger block and with darker skies than what we have now. Set up some dorm type accommodation, put down a few concrete pads and open the place up to the general Astronomy community.
Of course you'd have to give some away too. There is so much worthy research going on that needs funding.

If I was the sole winner of $90M. I'd give $10m each to my 3 family members, $10M to my favorite charity... Put $40M into a high interest term deposit, and spend $10M... two nice cars.. two properties.. One in brisbane city, one around 400km north west, 20 or so acres up at high altitude, 1x AP 3600 GTO, 1x 20" RCOS, 1x STL-6303, 1x AP 900GTO, 1x FSQ106N, 1x STL-11000.. all associated accessories, in a big double roll off roof observatory.....
Oh wouldn't life be grand
EDIT:
Oh... 3 things...
1 - Share $40M around
2 - Put $30M away for a rainy day
3 - Spend 20m on property and TOYS!!!!!!

Even $1 Million - Give some to family, by my wife a nice telescope :) by one for myself and an observatory, invest the rest...........not greedy.......would be extrememly happy with $1M...........

I'd be extremely happy with $1M... but $90M would be better...

Make a movie.
I agree 90 mill is just ridiculous as a first prize, one or two mill would be a good first prize, and then divide the rest with the other divisions.

Well, I'd be buying a nice home in a dark sky area with large percentage of clear skies...and then I'd be buying the 40" from here:

definitely buy a property in a nice location, a multitude of different scopes on offer to use, travel to all the good events and go to the eclipse - no matter where it is.
OK OK - actually i would do as i am told by SWMBO

First thing I would do is recover from the coronary I would have if I won $90M. Then a big property
Adrian
It's almost enough to log into bintel and order a nice scope for all 6000 ice in space members.
:lol::lol: yeah all of the above ;)
But im not greedy just 1mill will do ;)

1. Tell work where to go
2. Share a small portion with family
3. Buy a big country property and build a nice house
4. Invest the rest and live of the interest.
5. Pay someone to chauffeur me around in a '63 corvette
Oh, and...
6. Buy one of these... http://www.cruxis.com/scope/scope1070.htm

1) Hello? Virgin Galactic? 5 tickets on the next flight please....(for me, wife and kids)
2) Buy a Bugatti Veyron
3) Sell the house, buy an island and a BIG boat, house, observatory, put the remainder in the bank (probably a lazy 10-12 mill left)
Cheers

Hi Stephen & All,
I like that list -- just a couple of small but necessary modifications ...
(1) Pay someone to tell work where to go (let's say three times a day for the next two years). In that person's spare time I've also got a small list of others to whom they can deliver a similar message along with other sundry pieces of sage advice (say twice a day, 2am and 5am for a couple of years).
(2) Ditto
(3) Buy a big country (omit balance of the phrase)
(4) Invest in the coming new world currency: carbon-credits. You can't loose!!
(5) Pay the chauffer to tow the Ford away and get me a proper car.
(6) Yes. Indeed you do need two of these -- as a binocular telescope. And a "cherry-picker" lift to get me to the eyepieces (no more ladders).
Best,
Les D

If I won:
1. Buy a property in NW WA,
2. Get a 40" SDM
3. Get a 14" TMB Apo refractor with several smaller auxilary refractors for that "coolness" effect",
4. Put the 40" dob in a 15x15m observatory with adjecent bedroom and kitchen,
5. Chuck the refractor in a massive dome and pretend I'm Percival Lowell,
6. Build an airstrip on my property
8. Get a pilot license and buy a plane
9. Not work another day in my life :D
Shame it ain't gonna happen :(

Not a big wish list:. I'm pretty boring - I don't want to travel, don't want a flash car. I'd be happy with:
1. A nice place to live
2. A shed big enough for all the tools I would buy (see 3)
3. Tools to fill the shed (see 2)
The remainder 'd probably invest and give the yearly income to charity - less a little tool money for me :)

Would do all the usual stuff like sharing with family and setting myself up. Probably go back to uni. Love to study conservation and ecology and would be more than happy to work doing this knowing i didn't need to.
One thing id really love to do would be to buy a ticket on Virgin Galactic.
The secondary is as big as your primary :D
I wonder how many tickets they will sell?
If recon if they sell less than 75 Million tickets, it's a good investment. You can cover all the combinations with just $54 million.
Is my maths right?

Probably .. but if 10 others get it right also your possibly in a touch of trouble ?
1.. wake up wed morning and realise it was a dream .. again
2.. briefly try to convince oneself it wasn't .. but as the head clears
realise it was .. but still get a chuckle out of it .
3.. Come home from work to find the letterbox holding a fistfull of bills .

If I won the lot, I guess I would pay someone to follow me around and lift mt Meade onto and off its mount for me....to save my Back.;)
A second storey on the house with a dome on it sounds OK too.
HMMMMMMMMMM
:lol::lol: yep thats the one
:D
I'd reckon the first purchase would be to order two new Cat 1 tankers and two Cat 7 trucks for our Rural Fire Brigade.
I would definitely retire and devote more time to the RFS

pay off all my debts
buy a few more acres up the road in a darker location, build the dream home on it. plus the spicky looking dome with a very expensive setup in it.
travel a bit and see things ( not too much though3-4 weeks ayear would be fine)
not much else im pretty happy as it is.
You guys should save your money, I have the winning ticket right here ;)

Hmmm;
1. pay my debts out.
2. do what I do best.
3. find someone each week that deserves 1000 as a gift.
That is way too much money for anyone to have.
pgc hunter
01-07-2009, 01:19 AM
no way in hell it's not too much money to have.......
especially any astronomer...
1. buy a huge property in the desert..
2. buy a 40" SDM
3. Set up a 20x20ft observatory for the 40" SDM, complete with bedroom and kitchen
4. Buy a 14" TMB APO refractor
5. Set Up a 15x15ft Dome for the 14"TMB refractor and pretend I'm one of astronomy's great 19th century planetary observers
6. Build an airfield on the property
7. Get a pilot license and buy a plane
8. Never work another day in life
9. And thus enjoy unlimited evenings observing
10. Not find anyone to give a 1000 a week to because I won't be able to pay the mortgage on all this shebang!!
11. Give whatever leftover I have on my deathbed (and only on my deathbed) to some charity
AdrianF
