Does IIS have any control on the content of the Google sidebar advertisements? I notice there have been astrology and de-tox ads.

Hi Stephen.
Generally, no. Google delivers ads it thinks is relevant based on the content of the page.
However, we can block certain URL's if they're found to be ethically or morally offensive, competitors ads, etc.

Can you block those cheap department store telescope ads as well? Whoever looks through one of those would certainly lose interest in astronomy for good.

I tend to agree Vincent. I think we all agree that the "department store" scopes are detrimental to beginners, and these ads go against every piece of advice given in the beginners section.

Mike,
The sponsored adds, are they obliged to offer extra service or some sort of discount??
Reason being, I made an enquiry today and was told that their scopes were the final price as per their website.........
Whats the point then for sponsoring a site or being a preferred seller?
Kinda counters the sponsorship offering........
Would like to have your views.......

Marcel,
They are advertisers.
It's reading too much into the advertisement to call any of them "preferred sellers" or "sponsors".
It's completely up to them if, or what, discounts they may give to IIS members, or what prices they offer items for to anyone at any time.
IIS has no say in the running of their business, and vice versa.
I hope that clarifies things.
