Guys and Gals,

There's a partial lunar eclipse next Monday, should be visible in part for most of Australia.

Will update with more details once I have them.

Attached is my effort from the last penumbral lunar eclipse, on the 24th April 2005.

iceman

Ok, eclipse details:
- 6.8% of the moon will enter the Earth's shadow
- Best placed for those in the eastern states, in Sydney it starts at 9:34pm, maximum at 10:03pm and ends at 10:32pm.

Look forward to some more happy snaps of this event!

I'll be clouded out tonight.

Hope someone else gets some pics!

davidpretorius
17-10-2005, 07:48 AM
yup have looked at the simulation on starry night, have synchronized laptop time with some nuclear bomb clock somewhere.

have not seen a cloud in 2 days and 2 nights!

full moon = 7 passes with the toucam at 250x to be autostiched into a super big photo and then into afocal mode with an eyepiece for the eclipse.

not sure whether to use the telescope at all and just use the webcam by itself???

as for venus and antares, this is my favourite place in the sky at the moment, does not look like the 40mm will frame these two, so toucam on a tripod again!

Just had 30 seconds of sunshine - there might be hope yet :help3:

ving
17-10-2005, 02:47 PM
that 30 seconds just hit here too david! :)
if I'm lucky it might be patchy.... and i'll get to road test my new chair :D

Been raining here for the last 3 days and over cast for the last week.

Hope someone else has some luck.

I can't TouCam it yet but will try some Kodak moments! Sky is starting to cloud up again, hopefully it won't get any worse.

I've been looking forward to seeing this partial eclipse as well as the Antares/Venus conjunction. ( is it a conjunction? I'm sure one or more of you will tell me.LOL )
But I just can't be upset about the rain. We sure needed it. Everything is greening up very quickly, and we now have water in our dams.

h0ughy
17-10-2005, 04:53 PM
(Slightly off topic ) thats great News Janette, I commented on how dry to was out there, hardly any dams with water in it. how many points (mm) have you got?

(back on topic) the clouds are very teasing at the moment, the sun comes out and then goes away. i don't think i will have much in the way of a view for the antares and venus view, but for the moon to the east it is looking a bit more promising, maybe even enhance the photos with a bit of dramatic cloud to the edge of framing the moon. Can only hope :prey:

Noooooooooo!!!!
Why does it have to rain now????
Why not 6 months earlier

Not looking very good here either, rain for the last 3-4 days, cloudy for the
last week or so. But like Jeanette it's all good... water in the tank, garden is
a bouncing and the car has been washed : ) I'm not usually to fussed about
cloudy/rainy weather around fullmoon. It's when it keep appearing at new
moon that peeves me off.

17-10-2005, 08:20 PM
I just got some afocal shots of the full moon! The sky cleared!

That's the before shot taken care of, now hoping for clear skies at 10pm for the during shot!

The clouds are moving fast and there's more heading our way from the south :(

davidpretorius

a few clouds, but i think it will be ok

davidpretorius
17-10-2005, 08:32 PM
starry night 5 simulation shows some slight shadows starting at 7:58 your time.
that slight shadow covering the moon at 9:35 your time.

main darkness starting at 9:12 your time and greatest at 10 your time.

is this diffraction shadow form earth or the atmosphere????

Stu
17-10-2005, 09:05 PM
Had a quick look again then and my first impression was the about a quarter was looking a bit dimmer than usual. But after a few minutes staring I wasn't so sure...

iceman
17-10-2005, 09:20 PM
C'mon Moon, hurry up and go into shadow..

waiting.. waiting.. waiting.. :)

At only 6.8% we probably will barely even see it

ballaratdragons
17-10-2005, 09:36 PM
I have already taken my before shot and it happens to be the best Moon shot I have ever taken. BONUS!!

Yes Stu, there is a wierd bit of a darkish area in one quarter.

Here it is:

iceman
17-10-2005, 09:41 PM
How wrong was I! You can see the shadow easily on the south quarter of the moon.

Taking afocal pics is hard because of the shadow of the secondary. But you're on the right track there Ken, can see the darkening already!

Stu
17-10-2005, 09:42 PM
This is awesome. Venus and Antares in the south east, Mars climbing higher in the west and an eclipsing moon in the middle. The star party should have been this week!

And while outside, I just found the november issue of AST in the letter box! Bonus!

[1ponders]
17-10-2005, 09:42 PM
Take some good ones guys. Nothing but 100% cloud cover here :(

iceman
17-10-2005, 09:45 PM
You've got your west and east mixed up Stu, but I agree, it's a great night.. the clouds have miraculously parted for the event.

Nice.

ballaratdragons
17-10-2005, 09:48 PM
Getting darker in that quarter. I've got a pic but I don't want to waste time downloading it and putting it in. I'll miss the action!!

Yes Mike, I saw the blobby 2ndry spot, I just moved the camera off it!

gee it's great being able to use my scope again. It is such a beautiful clear night!!!!

Stu
17-10-2005, 09:55 PM
Woops! I just got back from the northern hemisphere, sorry...
Luckly I didn't get the left-hand / right-hand side of the road confused this morning.

iceman
17-10-2005, 10:23 PM
Man it's gonna take me most of tomorrow to process all these darn images..

It's a pity the seeing is so terrible, Mars is getting higher and I'm thinking of staying up for it, but the air is very wobbly.

seeker372011
17-10-2005, 10:23 PM
it looked good for a short while and then thick clouds rolled in...only had time for one quick snap through the eyepiece of my binos...and it was too late, just cloud everywhere, hope it was better for you guys

iceman
17-10-2005, 10:26 PM
haha nice one Narayan, I like the shot, it gives it a real perspective of looking through a lens.

We've had it crystal clear here for hours.. Amazing how different an hour or 2 of driving distance can be.

ballaratdragons
17-10-2005, 10:27 PM
Coooool! I got some great shots guys!

12" Dob, 2" GS 30mm SuperView. Afocal with Kodak Pocket Camera.
Transparency 10/10, Seeing 6/10 due to full Moon (obviously)

Pic 1: taken at 9:55pm
Pic 2: taken at 10:02pm (max eclipse)

Comments welcome!

Three days and two nights of beautiful still weather came to an abrupt end at 09:45 your time!!!.

Clouds started coming in from the west to block venus and antares = bugga.

Ok moon will be right, clouds on eastern horizon, but as the west is filling with clouds, i should be right. Right???

NOOOOO.

Clouds came in from west and east???? GO figure!

ANyway got a 8:30, 9:00 and 9:45, but nothing after that.

Captured in raw colour mode with the toucam. Clouds played havoc with exposure.

Anyway, happy with result.

There will be some great ones to come from the guys!!

Fun to share the event with friends!!

At least you got the full sequence before the clouds came in. Well done!

I have just finished watching the whole event from the clear skies of the NT
Didn't get any good pic's though, as I really need the tripod adaptor to get good shots with my little camera.
It was good to share the event with my Brother in central Qld, over the phone.
I must admit I had forgotten all about it, till I went outside & of course looked up (as you do).
The occasional low coastal cloud, added an bright orange halo around the moon, which was a nice effect at full eclipse ! :2thumbs:

Greg Bryant

At first it was "fun" trying to glimpse the Moon as it darted behind the occasional dark cloud, but finally it cleared here in northern Sydney. It was good to notch up another lunar eclipse.

For the trivia buffs, as far as partial lunar eclipses go (ie. excluding penumbral eclipses), this was the smallest percentage of the Moon to be eclipsed since 1970 (and that one wasn't fully visible from Australia). For a partial eclipse to be fully visible from Australia, and to have a smaller percentage than what we've seen tonight, you have to go back to 1958!

As the eclipse passed its maximum, I couldn't help but turn my attention to Mars which was lower down in the northeast. The eclipse may be over, but the next big observing opportunity is already here.

17-10-2005, 11:14 PM
here are my feeble attempts, Ken excellent photos, same with you DavidP. heavy cloud cover and sucker holes were the flavour of the night in newcastle.

the last one is through the Intes, the others with my trusty50-500 lens ;)

1st photo is of antares and Venus

the others are the best I got considering the conditions

the last one is of the moon and mars :help3:

ballaratdragons

Thanks Houghmeister, Your shots are great too!

I tried Mars but it was a moving mass of Martian Blob! Dew has come in now.

Hi guys, cool shots, thanks,

I made some pics with my 'not so good for astronomy' digital camera, it was awesome here and I was taken by surprise. I thought 7% meant you could hardly tell when in truth it was obviously amazing for all of us.

The first one is direct using camera only, the second is through a Celstron C8 with 40mm eyepiece. (all i had at the time)
