Just wondering if anyone has changed their desktop to reflect our hobbies.

Since I have reignited my Astronomy hobby again after nearly 20 years, I thought I would show off what my desktop looks like.

Hi Marclau & All, :)

Those desktops are rather neat, tidy and well presented. Not to neglect interesting.

In my military years, I was given a desk sign:

" A clean and tidy desk
is a sign of a sick mind."

Sorry people I could not resist.:D

Cheers Marty

Molly,

On your keyboard right hand side just above Delete and Insert key there is Print Screen key. When pressed it will copy to memory whatever is on your screen. Open any pics program like Photoshop or even the one that comes with windows (paint). Paste it there and save it wherever you prefer, smaller of course (save as,for web).

cheers

Just shortcuts to programs I use on black background. I still remember times when 16K of memory was a lot and it cost fortune. Today I got 2Gigs but I’m still kind of reluctant to waste it.

Thanks Bob and Ivan,
I was able to save an image in my picture file but it refuses to upload.
I don't know why because the other pic uploaded ok.:P

Kevnool
21-06-2009, 08:05 PM
Molly right click on your pic and the properties and look at the size of the pic, If its over 200kb it wont upload and you have to go and shrink the pic till it gets under 200kb.
PM me if you get stuck on shrinking it and i,ll explain it.
Cheers Kev.

Did you reduce it to below 200kb for the forum?

EDIT: Kev types faster than I can. LOL

Funny thing is when I took the photo I wasn't happy with it. Changed it from color to greyscale and it changed my outlook on it.
I try and use pictures I have taken for my destop.

Well, here's mine, very messy at the moment, I'm too lazy to clean it up lol. I have a 24" widescreen LCD monitor, so I can fit lots on it. The wallpaper is an original image (natural light Robberfly with prey - native Australian Bee).

I regularly change my desktop backgrounds and always use images of astronomical interest.
ATM I've one of my own on display. (I've been told I live in a nettie centric universe so why fly against public opinion:P)

My desktop is a shot of the Earth spread across two screens.

When I spin my 'Compiz Cube' my skydome picture is a panorama of somewhere out in space.

I found both these pictures on the net, and therefore, have no idea where they come from.

I'm Lovin' it. I call it MacWindows - all of the pretties and runs all my software!

The only issues I have had have been with [ironically] IE8 which has a cookie handling problem, otherwise near flawless.

I had a pic of my first grandkid, Seth, on my desktop at work. 3 months old lying on a white sheepskin and wearing only a santa hat.
A comment was made to an engineer sitting at the next desk re naked children and all that it has conotations of nowadays. So I used Paintshop Pro to put a nappy on him and sent it to the girl in question with the comment I had put it on so he wouldn't pee on my keyboard. Never heard another word :)

Hi All, :)

 My mistake, :P I thought, as I read the thread title that it referred to what the real desk top looked like. I further thought, "None of ya' g-- damned business."

I'm not one for being neat. When I was the boss of an electronic repair platoon in the Aust. Army, the guys gave me a picture plaque. It stated, " A clean and tidy desk is a definite sign of a sick mind.":lol:

Cheers Marty

LOL! Totally non-astro. I like a nice clean, elegant desktop.

PS - I've turned my desktop Windows QuadCore 64-bit PC off, for probably the last time, and gone fully MacOSX 10.5.8 on a 64-bit Dual-G5 Tower. Beautifully slick to use. :)

So does than mean you have a quad core box to give away? I've got a dual CPU Pentium-III that could do with an update, to join the Q6600 I already have. :)

Omaroo
21-01-2010, 09:26 PM
Always worth having a look Warren, for sure. I'm a keen user of Centos, and have been for about 5 years. Being a port of RHEL it's phenomenally stable and in my opinion the core is as rock solid as Debian any day. I already have dozens of virtualised Centos servers running, and some of the virtual host machines have been running non-stop for 4 years without a restart. Brilliant. :)

I'm a Slackware man. Have been for over 10 years. I've got a Thinkpad T400 running 13.0 64bit, Q6600 running 12.2 32bit that I'll get around to switching to 13.0 64bit and the P-3 running 9.something.

Click the 'Print screen' tab up the top right hand corner of your keyboard whilst on your main 'Desktop' screen. Then open go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint. Then in the paint program, right click and paste, your desktop image should convert into that program. Then go to File > Save as.... save it wherever its easiest to access it.

Then when you reply in this thread, just go to 'Go Advanced' down the bottom, click it and then you will see a a box down the bottom which says 'Manage Attachments', click it, press browse, find where you saved your file, then upload it. then vwaaala!

I have found that with Sabayon for laptops it is the only one that installs wireless hardware straight from the install disc no further configuration needed.

Once upon a time I used to change my desktop image regularly but have to admit in the last 5 odd years I've either just used the default or forgotten to change it for ages.

This image on my observatory computer is a dinky 10 minute film exposure I did one night while doing polar alignment checking. It's nothing I've ever thought was great but some how it ended up on my windows background 5-8 years ago and hasn't moved since!

So ironic for an astrophotographer.

Perhaps soon when I get a new Obs PC I'll find something more worthy.

troypiggo

Possibly :) But I've always been like that - on my Windows, Linux, and Mac desktops. Uncluttered. Totally unlike my office :(
