Well after a nice wet drive down to Sydney and back I now have a nice shiny new Sky-watcher 8" collapsible Dob.

It looks well made but alot heavyer than I expected.

Collimation looked good with only minor adjustment of the primary need, but thats just through a collimation cap, I don't have any fancy tools for that.

Now if only this weather would clear.

Congratulation...........jealous here........

One quick question, why the colapsable one and not the fixed tube?
Does more light enter the collapsable ones??

I'm looking at a possible upgrade to a DOB end of the year but seeking advice myself......

Congratulations. I am impatatiently waiting on my 12" dob to turn up. I considered the collapsible type but decided on "bang for buck" with solid tube one.
Hope you enjoy lots of great views with it!

Aha, so you're the reason for all the rain huh?!? ;)
Enjoy your new scope when the skies clear :)

Congratulations! I'm very jealous I must say!;) Would be quite interested in your thoughts after first light.

Don't bet on the weather clearing up for a while - I'll be picking mine up in the next few weeks!

Simply reason, I got the collapsible one for $399, the next closest price I could find was $490 for a solid tube.

But it is easy to carry around in two parts.

Thanks for helping my new lawn to grow!

I'd be interested to see how you get on. That is exactly what I'm looking to get (from the same store), but I'm also considering the 6" on EQ mount (same price) or the 8" on EQ mount (considerably more). Can't decide!

Congratulations, I'm jealous too :)

I'll be getting an 8" Dob at tax time though, so not too long to wait now :D

Hi all,
Have no fear the skies will clear in about 6=8 weeks time.
Reason for this assumption- I'm up near Cairns and will be buying a new scope in 6-8 weeks; Therefore the skies up here will darken with cloud and you southeners will have clear nights ahead,LMAO.
Such is life,LOL
Seriously enjoy your new toys.
Cheers,
Duncan

Peter, does the scope come with a light shroud for the truss?

Cheers

Hi Wade,
No it dosen't come with a light shroud, wouldn't be too hard to make one.

Shouldn't be a real problem anyway.

WHat could you use as a light shroud?? I was thinking one of those hard plastic (felt Inside) BBQ covers.............would that do and is it necessary to have one??

I would have thought just some thickish, or you could double it over, black material, sew the seems and use velcro to attach it.
