I have a canon A3 size IX4000 that seems to do the trick, at the bottom end of your price range (well, David Malin seems to like a recent image printed on it ;-). Recommended, at the price.

Epson also make a couple of nice photographic printers in that range, the R800 (A4) and the R1900 (A3+). These printers use pigment (i.e. paint rather than dye) based inks and have excellent lughtfastness.

I own a Canon i9550 from late 2005 and have a Canon Pro9500 Mark II on the way. I would love one of their professional printers but they're way beyond my price point.

Both print up to A3+ (19"x13" approximately) and print at 4800x2400 dpi.

The prints I have produced with the i9550 are nothing short of stunning (especially shots from my 5D Mark II). You need to use the right paper, too.

I'd love an Epson but, again, a bit pricey for me right now.

I have the i9950 as well and have no real complaints with it.

However, making an A3 size print with a black background would be damn expensive ink wise! I guess it would still be cheaper than getting it done at a printer.

The Canon ink for this printer retails for around $25 each in Australia. In the USA, you can get it for around $15 or so, or as a 6 pack with one of each colour for a discount.

The best price that I have seen for them worked out to $10AU each, but that was in Tokyo :)

For paper, I'm using Ilford Galerie (http://www.ilford.com/en/products/galerie/smooth/smoothMedia.asp).

You will get good colourfastness behind glass, but prints exposed to the air will fade noticibly after 2-3 years.

I get my ink cartridges for around $17.

Nice choice on the paper, too. I've been using the Canon gloss, semi-gloss and pro-platinum paper.
