Oh crap

First clear night for weeks, took my 20x90 bins, only 6 months old, out for some viewing, stood up to stretch my back when one of my tripod legs start folding down, the whole lot landed square on the front lenses on the road.

Both lens surrounds are badly chipped, and where the lenses join the barrel the plastic surrounds are cracked, but worse still is the twin images I now have, I've tried the collimation? screws but I can't even get the images close before they run out of travel.

Not sure if they are fixable, have to contact the suppliers, was trying to save for a dob.

Going to cry myself to sleep now

:eyepop::eyepop: oh no Peter im sorry for your loss :mad2: I know how that feels i sat there helplessly one night while i watched my hubby drop my scope after only having it for 2 weeks :doh::doh: Put a big dent in my tube so i took it to the panel beaters to get fixed :lol:
Oh well good excuse to upgrade ;)

Been there done that.
My little nephew who was learning to walk, used my tripod, with binos mounted, as a hand hold and pulled the whole lot over.
The binos were less than a day old.

Done something similar to a webcam I had just finished modifying went to set up the scope on the verandah and put the webcam on the handrail and knocked it over the edge it fell about 10 feet onto concrete and cracked the sensor. I believe I said a few "Oh Golly Gosh's"

I think that many of us have done something similar. Hung my small (but costly) binos on the back door handle. Turned the handle to get back inside to get the eyepiece box, down went the binos onto the cement step. When I look through them now it seems as if I have been on the turps all night.
Haven't had the nerve to tell the missus who helped buy them.:mad2:

Not Good Peter, you will never forget that crashing sound as it hit the road.

I have had a couple of close calls as well, but to date all is still intact, hope you can get them fixed, maybe your insurance will cover the cost.

Thanks everyone, yeah it's not a good feeling, just reading the replies it's amazing how these things happen.

Bad luck mate. I have to agree with Leon - check your home & contents insurance if you have any. Most policies cover breakage. I had a similar experience with a Takahashi FS102 Apo and surprise surprise my insurer covered it with no problems at all. You might be pleasantly surprised.

a screw driver hit the primary mirror of my brand new 12" flexitube skywatcher dob and it felt like the world stoped i thought the primary mirror got smashed and i couldnt bear to look at the damage as i sat down thinking i hope its ok i thought of my dead grandfather who bought it for me but luckly the only money ive needed to spend on it is for ep's near miss he was probly up there laughing at how scared i was:P sorrey to here of loss

I feel for you, my trusty Nikon 10 x 50's went in similar circumstances, felt like I'd lost an old friend. We had a real heavy rainstorm a couple of days ago, left my eyepiece case on the back porch under the eaves. When it got particularly heavy nipped out to check on it. Was right where the gutters had overflowed and now contained about a litre+ of water. Took 2 days to dry everything out, but fortunately no damage to the glass.
