My reprocess of John K's Mars

Hi guys.

John K kindly send me a data DVD with with his avi's from the captures he did on the 27th September.

I spend last night processing his avi's, and below attached are my results.

It appears John resampled his images up to give a larger image scale, but imo it's pushed it too far and reduced the visible detail and made the image softer.

In my processed versions, I didn't resample the image at all, so it's the same size as the original avi.

My processing involved:
- Usual align/stack in registax
- Wavelet adjust in registax (not too hard)
- Split and LR deconvolution in AstraImage (3/1.3 for each channel)
- Unsharp mask in AstraImage
- That produced the top image
- I then used NeatImage with some values suggested by Mike Sirios over on AstroMart forums in response to one of Anthony Wesley's fine images (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showpost.php?p=49595&postcount=16).
- It then produced the bottom image

There's some very nice detail present, well done John! Wish it was my avi that I was processing :)

Anyway here it is, thanks for letting me have a crack at it, John.

top work mike, you are very very good at this stuff.

don't think for a minute that because you do not have your scope at the valley, then you won't be busy.

simply put; me and ken have toucams, we are both armed and dangerous and with chase you around the camp for processing tips!!!

that's awesome. The bottom image in particular is quite amazing really.
Shows you that no matter how good the scope is it's really the processing skills of the imager that makes the difference. Well done.
Now just have to wait for the weather to one day, some time in the future, (it's getting ridiculous) to clear here in Melbourne! Thanks again.

I would like to try and mimik mikes attempt. I can also put it on my website so people can downlad and have a go to?

the file is 1GB so even when compressed it's around 25meg so too big to e-mail. PM your address to me and happy to send you a DVD.

No probs John, it was a pleasure! As I said, I wish it was my avi I was processing :)


That's true, I think the capture is really only about 30% of the final image. The rest is processing. And that is proven by the fact that it takes 5 minutes to capture an avi, but it's not uncommon to take many hours or even days to do the processing.
