The Luminous Festival in Sydney is a celebration of Light and music curated by Brian Eno and is part of the Vivid exhibition.
Each night the Opera House sails are lit with coloured light and patterns which are randomly generated and continuously morphed.

I had the opportunity to go down this weekend and photograph this amazing display.
Saturday night was raining so I took shelter under the Overseas passenger terminal but I wasn't happy with the angle so I returned last night and shot from a different location since it wasn't raining.

Hope you enjoy, I'll post more later when I get a chance to process them all.

Hi Andrew

You have produced a stunning photo of this iconic building. I had a look at the website and was surprised not to see your photo displayed! I downloaded the media kit and I couldn’t find anything to indicate the artistry portrayed in your photograph, so thanks for making this accessible to non-Sydney siders!

Cheers

Dennis

Stunning shot RB! I took the family on Sat. night, but it was drizzling throughout. I was hoping it would change from its pink to another color, but it was not the case.

I've seen some photos of the MCA building with different colours and they looked pretty cool as well.

That photo will make a great background wallpaper

Andrew,

Nicely done. How many exposures did you take for this composite?

Nice one Andrew! Beautiful shot! Was hoping someone would post some shots.

We're going to see Eno play in the Opera House in a couple of weeks time
so will have a look at the lighting installation then.

Best Regards

Gary

P.S.

As Brian Eno once said in a BBC interview, he is only interested in "quantity not
quality", so you might want to stick to the artist's spirit and keep them photos
pouring out

Thank you for your kind comments everyone, I really appreciate your feedback.
I'm sorry it took this long to reply, I had another one of my migraine attacks and have been laid up in bed for the last few days.
Hopefully I'll be back on deck by tomorrow.

Until then the other photos will have to wait till I'm feeling better, I can't wait to process and present them.
My youngest daughter is constantly on my case as she loves the colour purple and I promised her I would image the Opera House in purple for her.

Thanks again for your replies.

Norm it's a shame I didn't know you were down there we could have met up.
I was undercover in the Overseas Passenger Terminal on Saturday, but it was constantly drizzling all night.
The colours change at a random time interval between 5 and 20 minutes, so you must have seen a long interval.
LOL I must have stayed down there about 3 hours.

It's a composite of 12 different exposures, allowing me to capture a very wide gamut of colour and light intensity while avoiding blowing out highlights.

You're in for a treat Gary I'm sure !!
Looking forward to hearing about the show.

Yes indeed, quantity over quality........
(I was lucky I didn't get arrested for "land squatting" since I was there for so long waiting for the patterns to change.

Thank you Geoff and David.

I have just finished putting together a gallery of some of the more interesting colours and patterns and have also included some close up shots of the Opera House.

These images were taken on three seperate ocassions and at times it was raining which made it harder to photograph properly.

All done in HDR(tonemaped) with 12 exposures per frame.

You can click on the link below to view the gallery.

I hope you enjoy.

Deeno thanks mate, as you know, it's always fun to do HDRs and rewarding when they turn out. Cheers.

Glad you liked them too Petra.
I wish I could draw but I can't so it's as close as I'll ever come to drawing. ;)
Thanks for looking.

Jeanette, it really was techocolour as you say.
I've never seen the Opera House like this before.
Unique indeed, it truly is one of the world's modern wonders.

Norm, I hope you get a chance to go and see it once again in better weather before it finishes.
You'll really enjoy the family atmosphere down there.
I took my family down and spent a very pleasant evening walking around and visiting the other sites too including the Sydney Observatory.

Just back from the "Pure Scenius" improvised concert by Brian Eno at the
Concert Hall at the SOH.

A fabulous performance with some innovative music.

I liked how Eno would scribble notes which he could place on a tele-prompter
to direct the other performers - "Start warm. Become furious".
I liked the lounge room area on stage were performers could take
a coffee break mid-performance.

When we came out of the Concert Hall we were able to see the Luminous Festival
generative projections. Despite the cold and damp conditions and being a Sunday
night, there were thousands around the Opera House and Rocks out to admire them.
Lots of cameras were clicking!

RB thanks for the fabulous follow-up shots!

You'd appreciate a piece of prose by Eno tonight during the concert whilst
they were playing. "I don't care about the artistic intention. I'm just interested
in the effect".

Best Regards

Gary

Glad you liked them Ron, Gary and Eric.

Ron it's a pleasure to share, especially with those that can't make it to see the festival in person.
I'm working on another set of images which I took over the weekend, this time it's of the Vivid festival from around The Rocks which was part of Luminous. (Will post soon)

Gary glad you had a fantastic time at the performance and thanks for sharing your experience.
LOL I love the "Start warm. Become furious" and the "I don't care about the artistic intention. I'm just interested in the effect" quotes !

There really was a LOT of photographers down there over the weekend, I found it very difficult to get the shots I wanted this time because of the crowds.

Also there was the "Fire Water" performance which was almost impossible to view unless you got there early, where they had a ship coming out of the water and was set on fire then sunk again.
This was a re-enactment of an incident that happened at The Rocks back in the very early day of settlement.

It would be wonderful if another project like the Opera House were done for Sydney. This building seems to have represented the peak of creativeness for this city and its made the city billions in tourism as a result.

That could be repeated and funded with a lottery like last time. Something creative rather than just a bunch of skyscrapers.
