She's far too young in my opinion.
She won't have the disappointments of this world making her slight embittered, and the promise of discovery as change by the experience of being The Doctor's companion IMO. :(

According to the producer, she was introduced to appeal to the younger girls. In Dr. Who, the female companion grows in a particular way - seemingly as the naive investigator to transform into the Doctor's perspective of the universe. Now it seems his companion has to be both sexier and "equal" in some intellectual way to the Doctor himself - one whose very own experiences is clearly vastly outstrips and is superior (in a totally non-sexist way) Most of the "companions" are turned to his point of view.
Sources seem to be saying this will be changes to appeal to "...a newer, more modern audience.". (This is why the 11th Doctor Who selected is 22 years old - the youngest so far!)

I do agree, however, we should see what they do.

I am not sure why female companions should grow in any particular way in Dr Who. I think the idea of a savvy companion is much better suited to today's world. I thought the female character in Blink would have made a great companion. Sure the places they travel are new but I think with the proliferation of sci fi, in our world and presumably the Dr Who universe, any modern-day companion would handle travel through time and space much better than ever before.

To keep it in the Dr Who universe, it is not like the citizens of the Earth have never seen aliens- 20% of the episodes from the last 3 seasons had aliens landing/crashing onto the earth in plain view, anyway...

and, Dr Who's philosophy has not really changed in years- he has always been "progressive" and small 'l' liberal.
(hopefully this will not turn into a political debate. :) )


i have more of an instinctive problem with a 22-year old actor as doctor who but cannot wait to see how they both go. :thumbsup:

When I first heard Billie Piper was going to be a companion I thought oh no! not a teeny bopper princess, but she turned into one of my favourites (no one comes close to Leela).

Personally I think a red-haired, wee scottish lass is a damn good start. :D

Billie was great wasn't she.

earlie billie was a bit weak but later billie was pretty good!
similarly, early catherine tate was very annoying but later she became a strong character.
